How much money do you have? if you have US$ 2000, go with Canon EOS7D + kit lens. 7D has HD Video and able to shoot at ISO6400 for those nighttime or darkness and has so many bell and whistles. But if you are limited on a budget, go get EOS1000D/Rebel XS or EOS500D/Rebel T1i. EOS1000D is beginner's SLR, cheap and dependable but have less features. EOS500D has HD Video.
Me? I use EOS450D, but that's last year's model

I also have a Nikon - I have a S230 with the touch screen- I love it.. it is way cool. Takes great pics. I found mine online.. you can look around and find the best price.. In the end I got mine through walmart.com. because they offered a great deal where I got a carrying case and a free 2GB memory card.
I also took a look at the Nikon site - to see what was comparable and which one I really wanted.

Hi! You can opted for a new DSLR which is panasonic GF1, because it has interchangeable lens where you can borrow from anyone's lens..plus it is very lightweight and pocketable..many people are buying now as alternative of amateur camera... the price is estimated for about $900... but if u dont mind the pricing and bulky, u may opted for Olympus E-P1... it is almost the same as GF1 except that EP1 is very bulky... and but lightweight... im not sure about the price, so it is up to u ..whcih one u like and your needs.
but if u want a prosumer camera, u may get the LX3 or G10 ... that's the best choice...
hope it helps.

Hi! Since you are already a Nikon user, you can opt to buy Nikon DSLR range of products. If you have a knack in photography, and this camera will be for long term use, try to consider Nikon D90. It is a good DSLR camera and the lens come with it on the kit is not bad either (55-108mm Nikorr lens). My husband bought it a month ago and he is happy with his purchase.
