It has come to my attention that more and more people on mylot talk in their own language. The guidelines clearly state that the only language allowed is English. I don't mind when somebody asks: How do you say this and that in this and that language. But don't come up with entire discussions or posts in your own language.
If you want to discuss in your own language make your own mylot or ask mylot to make it possible for people to talk in their own language in a separate part of the site.
What do you think?

I have not seen any alien languages here except English. English is the only mode of communication acceptable to mylot. Other than that discussions will be deleted as it is clearly stated that we should stick to English alone.

hi diamani I really do agree with you. another thing that really upsets me is u for you, yr for your, dis for this, dat for that
and frndly for friendly and on and on like that, I guess the discussion was by someone who texted so much he forgot what the real English words were that he used the abbreviations for. It really threw me out of kelter, as it almost sounded like a gangster on some old movie with the dat and dis thrown in so much.

I definitely agree with you there. Quite why people see a need to use "txt spk" when the days of character limits is long gone is beyond me. It's not like it takes much effort to type an additional 2 or 3 letters to make a complete word.
To think that some of these people have children, and are probably teaching them to spell like that... to say it's destroying the English language could be a very accurate phrase in a couple of generation's time.

Hi diamania: I've always written my messages in english but i think it would be nice- as so many other forums do- to create a special space for those who doesn't speak english or just want to talk with some other people that know another languaje.
Hola diamina: yo siempre he escrito mis mensajes en inglés, pero creo que sería bueno- como muchos otros foros hacen- crear un espacio especial para aquellas personas que no hablan inglés o que sólo quieren hablar con otras personas que conocen otro idioma

I think people should stick to english because it does state that and I can't read other languages and understand what they mean. I don't mind if people ask what is this word or sentence in another language but I don't want the whole discussion to be in another language because then I can't respond to it because I don't know what it means. And if they do put something in another language they could translate it to English so we know what it says.

I wouldn't even agree with translations. Who says those translations are correct? It really isn't convenient either to discuss in multiple languages. When the guidelines say English only then it is English only. Of course names and asking a translation for a word or sentence is excluded from that policy, but hey that's common sense right? :)

Hi, diamania. I've never been aware of such a thing before you pointed it out. Surely, it's annoying to see some people talking in their own languages. As you said, according to mylot rules, the only language allowed here is English, and those who ignore the rules and talk in their own tongue are obviously violating the rules. Mylot is an open forum where people from different nations have the chance to communicate with others. If it is crowded with all sorts of languages, then communication must come to an end. I'm sure none of us wants to see that happen. So I think everyone here should follow the guidelines and make mylot a better place for all of us.

Hmm, I haven't noticed any answers in any other languages. But I haven't been on here too much lately and only get to visit what I'm sure is a very small proportion of myLot discussions. I'm sure if there are posts in other languages, then somebody will flag them sooner or later for breaking the rules, and they'll be deleted.
I'm also very lucky that my first language is English, so it's easy for me to write in English. It must be very difficult if it's not your first language, and I can see how it might be tempting to comment in your own language. Sadly rules are rules.

i converse only in english, the main reason is i know only four languages, english, spanish, malay and tamil...so most of my friends belong to different countries, so i could never use my regional language , because they will not understand the language and i do not understand their language, so English has been accepted as an universal language that everybody can understand, read and write..
so i use english and i recommend people to use only english..
happy mylotting..

hi diamania,
mylot is an english site and yes we all should be able to converse in english but there are times when you can not like mylot has so many interest and if you are discussing a Indian movie then the name wont be in english like Dilwale Dulhania le jayenge ( translated man with heart would take the bride) so the proper names would come , even if the english speaking dont understand that words.. but i havent find any discussions which purely is non english.

It's common sense not to translate names. If someone's name is Mohammed you won't suddenly call him Mark either. That's different from discussions that are written entirely in a foreign language. Other than you, I have found lots of such discussions. Fortunately, we have a great moderator team here at mylot. Ergo, such discussions are gone before you can say: "Discussion".

hello diamania,
Well, i did encounter a mylotter once who spoke chinese in his discussion. and then he was warned by another user that only English can be written in this site, and another just responded to his discussion. i bet that discussion is deleted now, why on earth would they do that, how many times we have to pinch the rules into their heads

I havent seen any discussion written purely on other language different than english. I dont think it should be wrong to write a short sentence in other language though. In fact i think i have done that a couple of times.
But anyway dont really see the big deal on here, if it goes against the rules, my lot will erase it and thats all, so why worry about it?

It's just pretty annoying if people don't read the rules before posting. That's basically the conclusion from this discussion or bottom line, as it's said I believe.
It's not a huge deal because the moderators are doing a splendid job removing those discussions.

Fortuanately, for me, I only speak English. You are right that nothing but English should be typed here as it is in the mylot rules. I think some people have forgot to read them apparently, since they want to type in their own language. I don't know how they expect anyone to underand what they are saying, let alone mylot admins. I think that everyone should abide by mylots rules and not speak in whateer language they want. I know lots of cultures are represented here, but if they know English, they should at least type it in here, since that is the only language mylot will accept. Good luck to you adn happy mylotting.
