Home, what do you mean when you say, " Make yourself at home." Does this mean to you go ahead, dig in my refrigator and cabinets. Go into my bedroom-bathroom? Or do we find ourselves wanting to say... "Make Yourself at home with the limits, meaning drink, bathroom, but ask me before you dig into my belongings???
Because if it were their home we are saying make yourself home, they would be like digging and living there???

LOL!!! this thread made me laugh!!! i believe most of the time, it's out of courtesy that people says that. But you are so right! Sometimes, people might not say what they meant. i don't think they will be happy if i walk into the bedroom and try on their dresses and sleeps on their bed, right? 'cos thats what i do at home LOL

Are you ever right, that is what I'd think too. My bed is like our, my husband and I's, sanctuary, it like we don't even like our kids there. His family, mom, brother, sis in law, all come in our room and plop down. We didn't even ever tell them to make themselves at home. They just did. Come right in drink out of the milk jug.. YUCK!!!
Thank you for replying.. I try to laugh about it too.. hehehe
I think findind things in life funny gets you father... HAve a Great Day!!!

I think this is one of those things that people say but don't really mean. Like Have a nice day! Or 'let's do lunch'. And like when people meet on the street and say 'how are you?', but never even care to listen to the response.
For house guests, I think this phrase should only be said to family or relatives where when you say 'make yourself at home', you really mean it!

I agree with you also, I know that is weird sometimes I have caught myself saying how are you, thinking to hear them say Fine or Good, but them say, "not to good" then go into it and it be like Hum... Sadly I was elsewhere in my mind of the busy things I had to do, but you know something since myLot and reading, thinking, and replying I find myself more focused and alert to others. I think it should be more of a family thing too or close friend.

I save this for really close people, but I take it to mean the fridge and bathroom, not my belongings. that's the way I take it when other people say it too.
