Will you sell an organ because of poverty?

I was watching Wowowee today. A woman was talking about how she planned to sell her eyes so that her family would have something to eat. I was moved by her story. I never imagined how one would do that. I remember there were people who sold one of their kidneys because of poverty too. Will you do this sacrifice for your family?

Lol....I have watched a movie before where the donor of sperm was the biological father of the recipient. Those things do happen.

There are so many other things that I can do to earn for a living so that i can provide for my family's needs instead of resorting to selling my body parts. This will be my least option. I will not put my life risk for selling my organ-- instead i will exert extra effort to be healthy for that i will have enough energy to work hard for my family.

I agree. Like I said a lot of times in my responses, I will find other means. I am sure there are a hundred or a thousand more ways. Never will I have any of my organs be taken from my body. We tend to do things just to be healthy. We try very hard to live longer. Why sell our organs then and put our selves to danger? Good day.

Let's stay healthy so that we can maintain our job and work hard and be more productive so that we will not resort to selling our body parts/organs.

Well, it's hard to tell or imagine when I'm not really put in that kind of situation, and I didn't taste the difficulty of poverty, I can't feel how the person feels. As for what I'm thinking now, I think I'd sacrifice myself for my kids, if I can do something for their good. I think if the woman had a choice, she wouldn't have to sell her eyes. I think that is the only option at that time, and she has to do that, otherwise her children will have no food to eat. She is really a great mother. But, what next? Perhaps she will just have to learn other skills to survuve and take care of the family.

ok, it's really a case to case basis. But in my point of view, selling an organ is not an option. To have something to eat, one needs to really work for it. I can see people who position themselves in parking lots, doing window polishing in cars for money. Others would bring chairs for rent in the vicinity of government agencies for people to sit on while waiting. There are one thousand and one ways to earn honest money.

It is something that i would probably do for my family. I feel that it is the kind of decision that you can make for yourself but you cant tell anyone else to do it. It would really come down to your family's economic situation. If cutting out my eyes and selling them would save the lives of one or more of my family members, then i would do it.

I bow my head to you, Sir for your willingness to do that great sacrifice for a loved one. I respect your opinion very much, Sir. You can call me a coward but I think I won't do that. I can find some other options.

I would not, sure there are other ways to get money for your family. Isnt donating blood is better what if you donate your kidney and in future, your child needs one what would you do
• Philippines
25 Oct 09
Yes, donating or selling blood is better. By blood letting, our blood is cleansed. Then, new blood will be manufactured. And yes, I might just reserve my kidney for a better purpose like donating it to my children or a sick sibling. Poverty or lack of food to eat is not that much of a problem. We can survive that for as long as we work hard and find alternative ways.

OK. Very nice of you. Your love for your parents is so huge and you can do just anything for them. I laud you for that. It is your prerogative. Thanks for responding.

I think given the right consideration and situation, one may be surprised by what they may or may not do.
• Philippines

Right. As for me, I am firm in my belief that I don't have to do it in whatever situation I maybe in. As I have said, There can be other ways.

I think I too would welcome such an idea instead of dying with starvation or resorting to crimes just to eat. But I would not probably opt for selling my eyes or any sense that I need, perhaps one eye would do (knock on wood), kidney would be okay too.

Ok. Your opinion is respected. I laud you for your willingness to do this kind of sacrifice. Not anyone can do that. I, too, cannot do that. I would rather find other solutions without resorting to crime. I am sure there are options.

I do know many people who have done exactly this because of poverty because they were too poor to help their loved ones. When it comes to myself only I will not do it but if in the future my financial condition crashes rock bottom and I am left with nothing else and there is no other way to feed my family the I will start selling my blood but I wont donate an organ. I love myself a lot.

I agree with you. I don't have anything against those who opt to sell their organs to survive, though. I can sell my blood too, but not any of my organs. I don't wanna be handicapped and become a liability, giving my family extra burden.

I absolutely couldn't do it, nor would I, even if I were starving in the streets. There are other ways of getting food without resorting to such extreme measures, and I'd make darn sure I took advantage of those resources. I might sound heartless, but whether I'm starving, dying in a hospital bed, or what not, I am not about to be an organ donor. I have my other reasons why, but I'm not going to get into them at this time.

I definitely would sacrifice for my family. But i don't think i would let myself come face to face in a situation that i would have to sell my body parts just to find something to eat. I would gladly treasure my body so that i can work harder and strive for a better tomorrow.

Definitely right. Me too. I don't think I would jump to such quick decision. It is irreversible. I will think of other options.

I think it's all horrible. There are enough millionaires/billionaires in this world to spread the wealth. If you ask me, the killer is really named Greed. There are sooo many ways to work out deals with farmers, contractors, etc... that all types of food and housing could be provided for thousands if not millions of people.

i would sell the things that arent necessary for life like 1 kidney that people usually donate.
• Philippines
24 Oct 09
Kidneys are very necessary, my friend. They filter wastes in our blood. If our kidneys start to fail, then, we are in trouble. I cannot donate a kidney for fear of losing my chance to live a long life with only one kidney left. I know it is ok to have one kidney but what if it gets weak? Good day!

..well, the story was very touching.. however, for me, I won't do anything like that if there is still another way I could make or earn money.. life is hard true, and I don't want to make it harder by selling my organs.. Money would eventually fade so I better take good care of my health because it is also one of my wealth.. better poor and healthy than rich but uncomfortable..

Very well said, Rayne. I agree with you. I won't do it. I don't want to become a liability. If I get handicapped, I will be a burden to my family. It doesn't solve the problem.

I think that everyone can do it, can sell anything if worst comes to worst, and there are no other option. I remember what I have read in the Bible which speaks of the time when the tribulation period shall come when there are no food, therefore, parents cook their children and eat their flesh. People killing each other just to survive. That would be the worst that will ever happened.
• Philippines

To be honest, I don't think I can do that. I am sure there are other ways I can do. If I lose my sight, what else can I do for them? I will become a liability. And to cook my own children? Oh God, I hope I don't lose my senses. Thanks for your response. Happy myLotting.

No, I would not do it as their are many charitable agencies whom I am going to ask for their help. As I also saw it that many sell their organs but after the money is gone they all suffer from the after effects of having a missing organs and now suffering from diseases or side effects of the operation. I think it is not good to sell one organs it is like a gamble full of risk and in the end you are most likely to suffer at the losing ends.

Very true. I won't do it for the reason of poverty. I can be an organ donor if I were to die in an accident. There are ways to survive poverty. Thanks for the response.

That was a real sad story and naked truth of poverty. But,i don't think that's the only remedy someone can do to feed their family. There are many ways on how to earn for a living. Ok,granting that she can give her family something to eat...and what's next? She will be a big burden too, becoz, her family had to take care of her since she is blind already. We just need to look around for something to start with, and,it is just a little perseverance that we need. Earning money is not an easy task, just we need to work hard and life will be easy then.
• Philippines

Exactly, Jaiho. We have the same views. I am sure there are lots of other ways. We really just have to persevere and work hard and God will provide the rest.

Everyone will be moved when hearing of the story. For me, although I meet such a despairing situation someday, I may have no courage to sell my organ. If there are some ways that can help me to make some money, I won't choose to sell a organ of me, which is next to impossible for most people to make such a choice. Of course, in order to survive from poverty, some people have to do like this for having nothing to do. In my country, people often say that the body is something you receive from your parents. So, it is not filial to sell a organ.

Well said. I agree with you. I will not do it. I will find ways. For all we know, the solution is just there, we just have to find it.

yes i would sell even my life for the benefit of my family, but i just wanna make sure, that once i sold my life or any part of it, my family would be having their dream life. I am not in a ratty life now, but i believe if it my responsibility to provide the best future for my kids. I was watching wowowee, you know if i was so rich and successful i would give that lady a help. i had just turn on my computer, after wowowee, cause i watch it everyday except Sunday of course suggest you post this discussion in the Forum Philippines

Oh ok. Thank you for the suggestion. You are right, I should have posted it under the Philippines forum. You are such a great family guy. You would do anything for them including giving up your own life. I don't think I can do it. If poverty is just the problem, I think I can think of other solutions.
