In the Philippines, most colleges are requiring their students to wear a school uniform. aside from this, they are also implementing a strict dress code for wash days. personally, i really don't like this policy because it restricts the freedom of the students. this is acceptable in high school but in college, i believe that there is a need to loosen up and let students explore. we are already bound by so many societal rules and this is an unnecessary addition to that. from a psychological point of view, these students arena for finding their identity would become narrowed because just look at how identical they look with the rest of the university students. there is no freedom to explore and they are still treated as kids who are reprimanded for not wearing the right dress.
mylotters, what do you think about this? i'd love to hear your say on this. ^^

From where I stand, it is really unnecessry for university students to wear a school uniform.
In middle school or high school, for various reasons, it is common that the students are required to wear a school uniform and most stuednts will follow the regulations without any complaints. But in university, it really restricts the freedom of the students if all students are required to wear the uniform, which is useless and unnecessary absolutely.
Have a nice day!

thank you! that was flattering huh. lol. of course, i am thankful that i am in college but i'm just not agreeing to the policy on school uniforms and dress codes. i want each student to find himself or herself in a crowd and wearing the same dress would not be very helpful to that. there's too much force from uniforms and rules on dresses that keep these students from doing that.
but well, thank you for your thoughts. ^^

as with anything you have to listen first if you want to be heard . as for discovering one's self by not restricting one's way of clothing himself one needs to follow certain guidelines first. we cannot just take somebody to court without proper reasons and a certain law being broken by that person, right? so much so that we cannot discover ourselves or express ourselves and expect to be appreciated if we wouldn't do the same thing to an institution that, no matter what country you came from, still has a hold and a jurisdiction on its students. and lots of experience when it comes to getting young people on the right track .

Dress codes and uniforms are for disciplinary purposes. For example, if there is no dress code a girl might show up in school wearing sleeveless top and skirt, the school doesn't control the guys that girl will encounter during the day. Its for conservativeness and protection. it's not being strict its just being uniformly formal and proper that will make us presentable and respectful.

Actually i prefer to wear school uniform because i really feel like a student if i wear one. During my first three years in College, we don't have uniforms. And i the burden i have is choosing what to wear on the next day! I don't have lots of clothes so when uniform policy is back and was just thankful about it, then i feel like a real student. hehehe. there are some of my classmate who really hate to wear uniform. It actually depends on the person but a student don't have a choice if it's a school policy!

In my opinion, school uniforms and dress codes are definitely not necessary. I feel these dress codes take away the freedom of the students. At a young age, people should be allowed freedom to the maximum because it is impossible toe njoy freedom at a later age. Schools and universities should keep this in mind and not interfere in the freedom of students.

i think restrictions on type of clothing is good to have but you if you have you need to enforce especially on sports teams. i know when i was in school, we had to make sure that the skirts were a certain length and the shorts and the tanks had to cover your shoulders. But the cheerleaders could wear theere little skimpy outfits during the school day and get by with it. i think there needs to be a no tolerance policy on every body not just ones that may make a mistake one time. I had a spanish teacher that got tired of the principle griping about dress code and he would stand us side by side for clothing expection and if you were so close but still off from measurement he would send you to see the principle. i was thinking that it would be a good thing to allow uniformity without uniforms. Maybe cut out the gothic or long trench coat look. I'm not saying ti's wrong. I'm just saying that the clothes that are associated with it may teach different lesson than thta of which they are intended. Children tend to take things to far and columbine is the reason a lot of schools got so stricked on there uniformity of clothing even if they didn't have uniforms were you still restricted. What sucks about is that you don't get a lot of the uniformity when it comes to clothes that are there for you to buy for your children. When you go school shopping the weather holds a large part as to what you tend to buy and sometimes the retailers do not look at them being able to legally wear at school even though they say it is school clothing. I think you've brought uip a good discussion.

I think school uniforms are great for all ages, for many good reasons. In college, I made up my own school uniform of a skirt or pants, a shirt and a vest. It was great and easy for me, so I didn't have to worry about what to wear. I also didn't have to spend a lot of money on clothes.
Contrary to what most people think wearing a uniform doesn't restrict freedom of expression, but rather enhances it, because it is the person inside the uniform and his/her spirit/personality that shine through, not just the external appearance of the clothes.
It also brings a student's focus to academics, not "who's wearing what". That can be saved for more social times in one's life. Materialsim and the extreme focus on it have been a detriment to the more important values of a society. One's identity is not wrapped up in the clothes he/she wears or does not wear, but in the character he/she exhibits. Unfortunately, we do need dress codes for that very reason. Too many young people (and even their parents) seem to think the Hollywood state of undress is a good way to attract attention; how sad! While fashion can be fun and interesting, clothes adorn the body in a more functional way, as in keeping us warm and protected from the elements. It is this fact that students need to remember when they are learning both academics and good values.

I think its necessary if thats the rule of any institution.Dress codes are meant to disciple the students on how to conduct themselves in university arena. The intellectual capacity of the students are the one being hone inside the university. It could lessen the burden of the students on just focusing on their academics instead of consuming more time on thinking what to dress up. Outside university one can express oneself to the maximum. Not all student are of same financial status. So it is helpful for some to have uniforms. Uniforms could be used even if you got only two pairs. With casual dress you'll be bothered thinking of your dresses. So its really better to think what university to enrolled in that have rules that suit one's fashion sense. There are State universities and other prestigious universities that don't require students to be in uniforms. State universities allows you to dress what your choices are as long you are dressed what ever it is.

Clothing is not the end-all and be-all of identity. There are reasons for imposing school uniforms and dress codes. It builds character especially when you have to go and get a job and look presentable to your potential employer. There are wash days for you to express your individuality. Being in a uniform saves time in the morning. Not to mention the savings that your parents make by not buying you a lot of clothes. There are also security issues involved which should have a higher priority than your fashion needs. Believe me, being in civvies is not what its cut-out to be.

I'm from the Philippines and I'm in some college in Intramuros, Manila and we don't have uniforms but still there is some limitations on what you can wear inside the campus. Somehow it's good to have some freedom in what you could actually wear but sometimes I find it problematic because I'm running out of clothes every now and then and how I wish there is a time where we get to wear some uniforms

Yeah, they are necessary for proper identification, though their are schools too would allow their students to study with the exemption of wearing uniforms. In my schools uniform are necessary to identify who is the students, faculty members or even the plain visitors due to protection and measurement policies of the schools. As when all the people who enter have no uniform it becomes hard to identify who is the student as in case their is a bad events thus it is very hard for the authorities to identify the perpetrator as criminals could easily mix up with the crowds of the school. I think it also look good to have uniforms as many could identify a student from non-students.

I totally understand how you feel, I am from Cavite, and I go to La Salle - Dasmarinas, it is the only La Salle school that has a uniform, I think. And it is so hot, I hope it is washday everyday, so I always feel refreshed hahaa

At my elementry, middle school, high school and college there were no uniform guidelines. Kids just wore what they wanted.
And it didn't hurt us any. Sure there were some who overdressed, some who went crazy and dyed their hair blue, but they got over it. Kids need to experiment with style to discover their own personal style and individual tastes.
