Tell me what you think of this idea

As some of you know, I have been seeking ideas for things to write about. I have never tried selling articles, but I enjoy writing and would like to give it a try. I came up with an idea and I would like some opinions. I was thinking of interviewing an elderly person (my mother) to get their perspective on how their life is different because of their age. I would address topics such as what daily life is like when you know that you are living your last days on earth; do they view money differently, family relationships, etc. Is the decision to buy a car colored by the idea that it will likely be that last one? Are health care decisions made differently? I work with the elderly and have always had a keen interest in the psychology of aging, so I believe I can write a thoughtful and interesting article on the topic. Would you be interested in reading such an article? What would be the best place to attempt to sell/post it? Thanks!

Thats a good idea but you may wanna include the things Grandma wish she never did, like things she wish she should had done something better. You might sell it to a magazine editor? or if it has become a book look for as publisher. I will buy it, WHAT GRANDMA HAS TO SAY..

Certainly you should write about things you are interested in, and this sound like a great idea. You might want to read the articles first and then shop around for a place to post it that gives you cash for your articles. There seems to be a lot of information on people who do writing here on myLot.

I had to write a paper that is similar to your idea for one of my college classes. We had to interview an elder and learn how it was different for them growing up compared to what it was like for us. The lady I interviewed is one of my neighbors. She is 88 years old. I went over to her house one day and I took my tape recorder. I asked her many questions and I got an insight on what it was like when she was a kid. They did not have cars. Their main mean of transportation was a horse and cart. They would trade the eggs and bacon from their farm at the local store for sugar and flour. Her father was a farmer and would take the bales of cotton that he grew on the farm to sell at the local cotton gin (which is where my house sits now). Her mother taught her to make cakes and her and her sister had the duty of sweeping the yard (a chore that she hated). She would often trade with her sister so that she would get her sisters cooking duty and her sister would get her yard sweeping duty. Her education was only to the 6th grade. The other school was much farther away and her father thought it was good enough if she was able to read and write. She didnt need to know anything else. I still have the recording of this interview somewhere. I would love to be able to do this with more elders and get different views on childhood.

I think if you love to write then this sounds like a great idea. I too love to write and I guess I do most of my writing here on My Lot. I think that an article like this would always be interesting as it's another viewpoint and it's good to read different views on different subject areas. There are lots of writing sites where you could publish an article like that. I write for the likes of Helium and they are a good writing website. The other site is Associated Content although I don't use them much as I live in the UK and the payment options aren't exactly attractive if you are living outside of the United States. I would recommend Helium without doubt and I have just thought of another good site and that is Triond. I have various articles published on Helium and Triond. Good luck in writing this article. I would be nice to get feedback from people who have read your article. Andrew

I think it’s a great idea and I am sure your article would make fascinating reading. It would give readers insight of how times have changed with specific examples. By interviewing your mother you would add the personal touch and how it feels emotionally to be aging in today’s’ world. I see it as a very promising piece. You could try sending it to an editor for perusal. If you don’t have a publication in mind you could get a copy of Writer’s Market which lists all publications, writing guidelines etc. It comes out each year and is available from book stores. Good luck with it!

I think there is a need or a market for these kind of articles. The baby boomers are just geting into this age, and a guide or a perspective on what to expect from life from here in on could be interesting. And like you said, you have to write it in a thoughtful, interesting way so those of us who read it could be appreciative of the perspective.
