Well i will hold my hands up to burning the dinner.I was trying to do the house work as well as trying to sort the children out that resulted in the dinner being burnt,or as i would say very well cooked,it was the meat in the oven i had burnt and it was that bad that i had to go and buy a ready cooked chicken.

Am I the only one who uses the smoke alarm as a dinner bell?

Hi shantiquarian: maybe you're not the only one but please, don't invite me when you're cooking. Lol. XD. There are a lot of distractions, i admire how a person can stand in front of the kitchen for about 20-30 minutes waiting for the dinner. I usually decide to go and do something else even if i know whats going to happend. Lol. XD

My grandmother was a great cook, never burned anything that I can remember. The aunt that raised my mother was also a great cook and never remember a burnt pot in her house. My mother on the other hand always burnt the rolls and being a farmer who doesn't have the time to watch a pot, well like I said smoke alarm goes off a lot around here. I had my Gkids last week and the first morning they were here the 2yr old was looking at the alarms which are way up as I have a vaulted ceiling so I ask my daughter. Seems when they had been here the week before while we were in KY she burned something and set them off which she does at home a lot. The difference here is that mine are brand new and hardwired and make a horrible noise.

Yes, I have burnt some steak I had broiling in the oven once. The phone rang and I did not get back in time to check the steak. I did have more in the freeze so I thaw it and cook it just the way we like it. It was juicy and very delicious.

Hiya jugsjugs,
Can put my hand up too none of us are perfect. Lentils are very water absorbing and you have to keep an eye on them constantly and the greens you have to put them halfway before the lentils are done otherwise the lentils start to stick on the bottom of the saucepan.
So happened that I left if for five mins very short mins and the base was already burning but luckily I had another fresh saucepan at hand and I quickly transferred all the lentils into that added a cooked potato which takes of the burned taste and soaked the other saucepan right away. I was just lucky that time since then I have been more careful.

Hi jugsjugs: "Ouch"! it sounds as a bad night. It happends sometimes, specially with persons like me that don't cook very often. I usually forgot everything while i'm watching tv or talking in the phone until i notice that my dinner is burning. Awful.

If I say that I am an excellent cook and I have burned nothing till now then I would be lying. Not the first part, I am an excellent cook, but there has been occasions where I burned the food that I was cooking. It happened when I was a novice but things are different now.I too burned the chicken a few times once by forgetting about it, as I was making out with my wife and second time I set the wrong time on it.

I always have burnt dinner my daughters do not complain anymore how overdone our fried fish could get. Sometimes I even burn fried potatoes. Cooking time also means doing the laudry or sweeping the floor or paying the bills online...

I think every mother has burned her dinner at least once. i know i have. We are guilty of multi tasking while we are making dinner. We think we can do it all. Before you know it, your dinner is on fire.

hahaha~ yes, i have burnt a meal thrice. One is a chicken recipe, another is a beef recipe and lastly the roasted pork. Well, all i can say is, errors are just normal, we are not all perfect haha~. But still, when you burn a food, it'll go to waste :( that is the sad part... i should try to concentrate next time hehe

I don't remember burning anything recently, but yes I am guilty of burning dinner. Sometimes we forget that we put something on the stove and then proceed to do with other chores. One of the most common foods that I burn is rice. But recently I have not burned anything because I make sure to remember that I am cooking something.
I guess the worst dinner I have burned is chili (beans). They stuck at the bottom of the saucepan and I thought everything was okay because there was still bubbly sauce on the top. But when I stirred the pot, that's when I discovered that the bottom part was burnt.

I took over cooking the family meals when I was 12. I learned very quickly how to get even with my parents when they got me upset. I would either treat them like Greek Gods and serve them burnt offerings or I would serve the food nearly raw, which ever was more offensive to them. Today I burned a pan of cookies I was baking. I was officiating at the delivery of my new dryer and lost track of time that the cookies were in the oven. They were so burnt that the dogs, raccoons and skunks wouldn't even eat them.

I think anyone man has done any cooking at all has burned something. I have a few pans that I have ruined and certainly a goodly number that I have rescued.
I have become a little wiser in that I use timers now or have my equipment automatically turn itself off when it is finished. For example my steamer has a timer on it, you set it to the time you want to cook and it will turn itself off. My kettle is a whistling kettle which alerts me when it is boiling. My microwave turns itself off. My toaster oven turns itself off in the toast function, and beeps. My next one will have a timer for the oven as well.
I also have small electronic timers that go off when I preset time and I set them when there is something in the oven so I know what time to check them. If it is not done I reset the timer.
I remember a long time ago when I used to live by myself and would come home tired from work I would pop a TV dinner in the oven and sit down to watch TV while it cooked and frequently would fall asleep waking up to a burnt dinner with smoke in the house. Not a good plan.
