Souvenirs: How do you choose what to buy and where you can find it?

Traveling have been my passion ever since i can remember and one thing that i always have problems with is deciding on where and what's the perfect thing to buy when I'm in other places. It's mostly on souvenir for my friends when i return home. I always give them key chains with names or pictures of the place i just visited but i want to buy something new... And items on malls and souvenir shops are mostly overly priced.
I'm not really that rich so it must be affordable and i will be able to buy in dozens. Is asking locals a good idea? Do you have any suggestions?

I haven't traveled outside our country yet. When I do, I will make it a point to be prepared for that task. Maybe, I will ask friends about their local products and delicacies. If not and most importantly, I will really need to do a research over the internet and look for these places. That is what I do when I travel to some places in our country. I ask friends who have been to that place.

Usually I will buy some little handicrafts and local foods as the souvenirs. As they are easy to bring. I think not buying the souvenirs in the tourism shops will be good enough because usually it'll be expensive there. You can check other stores outside of the tourism places.
I love China

i've only been to few places out-of-country but that's only because i know someone from that place. if you're new to a place or you don't know anyone from that place, its not bad to ask. if you want to look for souvenir, go the place where the locals buy their products, not in malls, not in specialty souvenir shops because they are a lot more expensive. local market place lets you bargain for prices... if you know how to ask... :)
