Generally people will use different cooking oils for their day to day cooking. in some areas people will use coconut oil, in some other areas olive oil, and in some areas groudnut oil and sesame oil in northern india, they use mustard oil and some people use sunflower oil and palm oil or rice bran oil. I will use sunflower oil for some type of curries and sesame oil for some other type of curries. Which oil do you use for cooking?

All oils are equally nutritious. However there are some oils like mustard oil or coconut oil that leave their flavours behind on the cooked food so that you can easily make out which oil it has been cooked. I prefer to use the oil that does not leave its flavour behind so that the real tase of the food cooked in the oil can be savoured.

Hi mistlady
I think you have joined oflate and enjoying well. Welcome to this mylot family.
you are correct. Though all oils are equally good, some people are choosy about the flavours. We use sunflower oil and sesame oil. If I make snacks like chakkili, I use coconut oil. Thanks for your response. Bye for now

After doing a through study on the Net about various oils I have now settled down for Sesame oil which has very good properties. It is rich in vitamin E and minerals such calcium, magnesium and phosphorous, It is extremely good for the skin as it is a moisturiser. It has curing properties. Those with high cholesterol, BP should go in for this oil.

hi allknowing
your are correct. Sesame oil is the best one and from ancient times people were using it and they do not know what is skin disease. Even my fore fathers were using it. My grand parents' and parents' skin was always soft and shining. Even I use it for certain curries and other dishes. Every week end, we apply sesame oil in the head and massage it, wait for 30 mts and wash the hair with sikakai powder.

Already I am using it since my childhood. For certain dishes we use only sesame oil to make curries with veg. like ladys finger, brinjal, colacassia and potato. Every week, we massage our head with luke warm sesame oil with beetel leaf, ajwain and peppercorns added to it if it is a winter season, to avoid any cold or cough and fever and fenugreek seeds if it is a summer season for coolness. wait for 30 minutes and wash our head with sikakai or reeta powder, mixed with some hibiscus paste for conditioning of the hair

Hi vathsala,
I am using 'Dhara' oil for cooking which is refined from mustard oil. Mustard oil has some kind of smell and all people won’t like it but it is good for health. In south people prefer to use coconut oil but now people are realizing the problem with coconut oil which may add the taste but not good for health especially those who have cholesterol problem. We are using the coconut oil with some kind of dishes only.

Hi sree
We use mustard oil for massaging during winter. Since i do not like its smell, I do not use it for cooking. occassionally I use it for making pickle. Generally I use sun flower oil and for some sort of dishes, gingelly oil and for deep frying murukku, tattai, and seedai and chips, I use coconut oil.

Vathsalagaru,
Ofcourse aunty all the people use different kinds of oils according to their taste and use. But in our house we always use sunflower refined oil. If we change the oil, everybody gets allergy. So we dont change the oil.

Hi daffy
Even we were using palm oil until some years back. But since olive oil is expensive, we do not use it for cooking but for massaging during summer. In winter, we use mustard oil for body massage. Thanks for your response.

coconut oil and vegetable based oil are commonly used here because they are cholesterol free. Large areas in the Philippines are covered with coconut trees so we have abundant supply of coconut oil. I understand that in some countries they are mostly using palm oil because of it's abundance.
cheers!

In our house most of the time we use sunflower oil. But we add sesame oil and coconut oil for certain items. Just now I made avial, which is made out of lot of vegetables together and yoghurt, coconut, chillies, cumin etc. For this coconut oil will give good taste. For thuvaial which is like a paste and of multi-use and made out of cetain vegetables, we use sesame oil. I used rice bran oil but I did not like it.

Yes. Even i heard that olive oil is good for health. But it is very costly in India and we can't afford for it. So we use sunflower, sesame, peanut and palm oil for our cooking. You are correct. peanut oil is the tasty one. But the snacks made out of it smells a little old, if stored for more than one week. So the crispy snack that demands deep frying, we do it with coconut oil which always stays fresh. We can store it upto 10 days. Thank you and keep responding.
