Time to say "Good Bye"

Yes, that time has come, as I knew it would. I even knew it would happen this past weekend. While I was away, visiting my sister-in-law this weekend, my sons' dog passed away. Sable was 11 years old and lately she had been starting to show her age. She was my kids first dog. My oldest son (he'll be 26 this week) was home with her when it happened, he held her in his arms as she slipped away. It was upsetting to not be with him, but I know he did the best he could for her. I know she was only a dog, but she will be truly missed.

I am so sorry about the loss of Sable. I have an eleven year old dog that we’ve had since she was a puppy and, believe me I know how attached we can get to our animals. I have my dog, two cats and a little bird and to me they are part of our family so my heart goes out to you and your son. My cat is very sick at the moment and saying goodbye is something I may have to face eventually...It is the tough part of pet ownership.

I hope everything goes ok with you cat. It's so hard to watch them be sick, feeling the time is close for them. When the time is right, we'll get another puppy, but I'm not ready for more pets right now.

My cat is still around although a bit thin and not as hungry as he used to be, he vomits regularly; he is on medication and there is nothing more the vet can do for now so we just have to keep an eye on him and pray; I am prepared for the worst...Well as prepared as one can be for this sort of thing. When you are ready another puppy it will not replace Sable but will fill the void a bit by keeping you occupied with him, puppies are hard work and mischievous but they are also a lot of fun! All the best...

reinydawn That is the hardest thing, she was one of your family as pet dogs are and we do grieve, it is really so hard. But one thing that I have had a very hard time to ever forgive was my parent having my dog put away with out my permission. I had my two kids in ten and a half months, and needed to let my mom care for my dog while I recuperated from a very rough second childbirth. I was ready to get my dog from my mom and sister, and they had to tell me that they thought she was too old so they had her put down so they could buy a little pekingese. I cried so hard and my husband tried to reason with me. but the thing was that it was not their right to do that. my dog was old but she was not ill, she was just old and was a bit crippled but to put her to sleep or not was not their decision. I finally did forgive but I have never forgotten and feel that my mom had overstepped the bounds,

OH, that had to be very hard for you. It would have been much easier if they had talked with you about it and let you decide. I know we were getting close to putting Sable down, I'm glad she didn't suffer too much.

thats terrible, it was your dog and you should have taken part in the decision. they had no right to put your dog down without you saying they could.

Sorry to hear of Sable's passing. You will always miss her companionship. She was a part of your family for many years. It is only natural to grieve. If someone tells you that you shouldn't they don't know the special love that a pet can give. Big huggers to you.

Yes we do get attached to our pets. We also will outlive our dogs and cats especially so we can expect to outlive several of them in our lifetimes and I guess each time it is hard to see them go.

I had dogs when I was a kid and remember when they were put down. I also had a few guinea pigs that I had to bury in the back yard. My sons also had guinea pigs when they were younger. But Sable was their first dog and she'll always hold a special spot in our hearts. I know we'll get another dog, but it won't be any time soon. And to think I'll go through this again in another 12 years or so...

I know the feeling, I had to let my lil girl , Gheyske', go. She had bone cancer and was suffering to extremes. I was there for her last hope and she fought hard to the end, I kept her that long because of me , she told me in her eyes and her expressions that I had to let go of her. She wasn't just a dog , SHE WAS MY LIL GIRL. LUV U GHEYSKE' ALWAYS..... REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV YOUR DOG/ PET , THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U...

Though she was only a dog she shared a lot with him for eleven years, from those teen years on, she was there. I would think that Sable probably heard a lot of secrets from him and maybe some rebellion as he grew up. I am glad Sable was not alone.

I'm glad she wasn't alone too. My son was with her the whole time. I was just very sad that my son had to go through that alone.

I am sorry about the loss of the family pet, especially one that has been part of a family for so long. Actually, my wife and are looking into having our one dog put to sleep as he is not doing good health wise. He has a very sensitive stomach and has frequent diarrhea accidents and urinary accidents within the house. I am not looking to say "good-bye" but I do not want him to suffer if his health is bad.

Yeah, we knew it was coming and were hoping she wouldn't be in too much pain or unable to get around. I'm kinda glad that she went quickly so she didn't have to suffer much.

She was a pretty lucky dog - as we were to have her. I think she was usually happy, and that gives me some peace too.

I'm really sad that that had to happen, but this happens to all pet owners and it never gets easier to here. I lost my first dog when he had leukemia. I he had to be put down because he was just suffering. Even though im glad he was no longer suffering it was hard to seee him go and i still miss him.

I'm very glad that Sable went somewhat quietly and quickly. We were worried that she would end up miserable for many months.
