Why is it people think that texting takes priority over everything?

I hate the fact that i could be with anyone chatting or having a drink etc and if their text sounds it takes priority over everything then i get ignored while they talk through text! It annoys me so much! Anyone else hate this? or does anyone actualy do this and why?

You know what? After thinking about it for a second, I realized that I have done this. Even though I do hate it when people get a text while you're in a conversation with them, but they answer the text regardless of what is going on around them. I usually will say hang on a second, but only if it's important. If I get a text from a friend I wait till I'm done with the conversation.

Yea if i was expecting an important text i would ask to be excused from the conversation as it maybe important if its just a random one i just leave it and often people will notice the sound and offer to wait for you to answer it!

I hate it when we go out for dinner or something with a group of people and three or four of them sit there typing away on their phones. I don't have a problem with texting and with using it as a means of communication but when you're doing something social with a group of people it's time to put the phone away. I don't care if someone checks their phone or sends a quick reply but it does bother me when people are supposed to be part of a social activity and are instead spending the whole time talking to other people. Perhaps they should have invited them along.

Okay Okay I admit I am totally guilty of this!! I'm like addicted to texting, I have my phone with me 90% of the time no matter what I am doing! I have to make a point to turn it off or leave it in another room sometimes so I can do things with my kids or whatever! I know it's horrible and I'm trying to get batter, but I have to be honest and admit that I do text ALL the time!! I can text and carry on a conversation though so if I'm talking to someone and I get a text I don't ignore the person. I can text without looking at my phone too!

I agree that it is pretty rude. I get annoyed when people do it while I am having a conversation with them.
Whenever that happens, I just stop, and indicate that the person should finish texting first. Usually, this works; they get so embarrased that they stop texting right away.
I guess people are just getting used to mobile phone etiquette.

I hate this very much too. I mean I text too, but if a person is talking to me or hanging out with me I will never pick up the phone during a conversation. I might check who text me but I would never try to have 2 conversations, that's just plain rude.

It is rude but people think that its ok to do this! Is it lack of respect or do people just not realise that they are doing this i wonder?
