Unfortunately I'm a student and I work at Tim Hortons. (For those of you who don't know, Tim Hortons is a coffee shop/restaurant thing) And I hate it there. I can't stand the people I work with, I don't like how irresponsible management is. I don't like how unfair management is about me needing certain days off. I never get them. I always ask with a reasonable amount of time and I never ask for weeks at a time off. Just a day if I ever ask for time off. I haven't taken a vacation at all, and it's so irritating.
I want to quit so badly but with the holidays coming up and school, I just can't afford to. It's driving me crazy.

I agree! If you don't love your job then you are not neccessarily going to be good at it. Once upon a time I was working in security and I was stuck at a desk for twelve hours a night, I absolutely hated this job and I just had to get out! Well, I'm now trying to get into the IT industry! I love everything to do with computers! This is where my enthusiasm now lays and I'm hoping that I can improve and do well in my studies, I want to create the life I want for myself and stop being depressed and miserable! Well, that's life! Andrew

that's true and there is an escape route which i believe is to either quit the job or try change the situation around for the better, if the job is financially rewarding i think the second option will be most suitable that is to change the situation around for positive.

There's nothing worse than having to go in to a job you hate with all of your heart. Except having no job. I feel your pain. I had a job I sincerely hated, the job itself the people, the management and the policies. But three days before Christmas I got laid off. I was scared about money, but man, was I relieved. I can't say I like the job I have now a whole lot better, but at least I pretty much like the people and the job is so busy I don't have time to dwell on what I don't like about it. Good luck!

What worse than hating your job, is complaining about it. Instead focus on finding another job. The time you spend complaining, you could be using to work on your resume, practice interview questions in your head, learn something new that you can add to your resume.

hello katisaurus,
i totally understand you for not having any day off or vacation for that matter. plus the fact that you don't like the way the management is running the business.
but i'm afraid you don't have any choice at all because you are studying. and because of this, whether you like it or not you need to like your work. because in one way or the other, your work is a big help to sustain your studies. just be patient in doing it. anyway, it's only temporary and that you can find a better job after finishing your studies. just don't mind the people around you. or better yet, make friends to them. that way, you can ask someone's favor incase you need a vacation. sounds good to me....

I do understand the situation. I am sure that it is really hard to work in something that your heart does not want to and to people you dislike. Well, for the moment, the best thing to do is continue for the moment considering that work these days are hard to find. The key is to do a little sacrifice until such time that you can find a job that you look forward to work to every single day. But for the moment that you are there, give it your best and do your work heartily.

I know what you mean. I had a job once working in a wire cloth factory. I had never worked in a factory before. The attraction was the good pay that came from the job. I quickly found out that I am not a factory person. It was the most thankless job I ever had. We had to wear steel toed boots to be allowed into the building. By the end of the day I looked like i had fallen through a mine shaft. Not a pretty sight! I would almost cry when it was time to go to work and I could not wait for the weekend to come. I am surprised that I stayed with the job for the four grueling months that I did.

I agree that working a job you do not enjoy is pretty terrible. I myself am in a similar situation. I like the actual job, though, just not the people so much. I do not seem to fit into the mold they have created and I have a creative mind, which they do not seem to appreciate. I think that if I did not have a job though and was having a terrible time meeting my families basic needs it would be much worse. So I keep working, and searching for the career change. Stay in school and get an education you can use and you will have a job you love in the not so distant future.

You should improve your emotions, now you should feel luck to have a work experience
at the unfair and irresponsible situation. From now on ,if again you find job,you can how to select a good job where you can't be treated unfairly and unreasonably.
That is to say, have a moat, learn a lesson.

I am also working in a company where I don't like my co-workers. But I am using my head instead of my emotions because of the bills I have to pay and other expenses I need to cover. We really can not control other people's personalities and attitude. What we can control is ours. So instead of sulking because we hate these people, we can just ignore them and focus on our job and be happy that despite of the recession, we are the chosen few who are lucky enough to still have a job.

I agree with you. Working at a job that I don't like gives me stress allergies (little itchy bumps that appeared on my legs and arms). It is so difficult to wake up in the morning and practically drag myself to work. Once I have a job that pays well...unfortunately the environment and management is not good. I end up going home stressed everyday. when stress allergies finally appeared on my skin and I started crying on Sundays because it will be Monday in a few hours I know the time has come to resign.
I left the company good pay and benefits and all that because I cannot handle it anymore.
Now I am working at a company I love. The pay is not that great but I look forward to coming to work everyday.

I also agree that the saying what is worse than working a job you hate is have not a job, since you will go back school a period of time later,it is a short time,so why not take relax and enjoy it.

i do think you need to do something about this, you have got to find a way to get yourself out of there. its not healthy physically, mentally and emotional for you, at sooner or later you will start to affect the people around you like your family and friends, this stress could lead into somthing bad. Since i know you are worried about your financial needs you can actually start looking for a new job, when you are sure about the new job, secure it before resigning from the old one. this way you will not have a gap in between where you got no earnings. i wish you well.
