In this age of economic difficulties, I found it necessary to cut costs in many of my expenditures including power bills. Simple energy saving measures can really save a lot. I learned how to cut the use of air conditioners, it will be on just for a certain time in the wee hours of the morning and fans will do the rest of the cooling. I changed my light bulbs to CFLs, compact flourescent lamps, low wattage but give brighter lights. The ironing will be done once a week instead of doing it everyday, flat irons are notorious in devouring electricity. Do you have your own saving measures?

hello manong,a very relevant subject.I try to save the use of electricity as much as I can.I have made it a habit of switching off fans and lights whenever they are on unnecessarily.Have reduced the time the oven is working.Though I have reduced the ironing,I have not taken into account the fact that fat irons use more electricity.

Yes leaving the lights on when they are not needed is one cause of high electric bill. Flat irons consume a lot of electricity. Just imagine a light bulb consumes 15-40 watts of power, flat irons run to as high as 1000 watts. Ironing everyday will cause an astronomical increase in your monthly bills. cheers!

I've watched from a television that its better to use computer or other home appliances late at night because few people are using this during night time. Another is to put those appliances not a hot place. Lessen the use of oven, rice cooker and other appliances that turns hot when use because its just like a flat iron. It consumes a lot of energy. :)

Yes ovens and rice cookers consume lots of electricity. It's not really wise to expose appliances to heat as it increases its consumption. Using some during off peak hours is also a good tip. enjoy!

We have an energy saving device plug in. We've been using it for a couple of months now. So far, it is effective for us. It cut 1/5 of our electric consumption. Aside from those tips you mentioned here. It is really important to know these things in order to cut the cost of our energy bill.

Just to be able to cut energy consumption even to 20% is an accomplishment in itself. It just needs a little discipline and ingenuity on our part. cheers!

You should meet my landlord. I cannot put on a light in the apartment unless I'm in the room doing something. He turns off the water pump whenever there's water in the line. If there isn't I have to actually use a bucket. Just now I'm arranging an internet line for home and he wants me to assure him that when I'm not there the line will be unplugged. What a scene !

Yes, that quite a scenery you have there. Some people are just overdoing it. LOL In some ways, there's something good in it too, I think. enjoy!

Carrier and Condura brands of air conditioners have this energy saving feature in its plugs. As you unit turns off, the fan automatically turns-on. It actually very efficient in saving electricity. Each day had to set the air conditioner timer to just 4 to 5 hours each night and the remainder is the fan. You cannot see any incandescent lights in the house too. Had replaced our old bulky picture tubed TV in the room with the LCD type to conserved heat and thus conserving the air conditioner power.

Yes, incandescent bulbs are monsters in consuming electricity unlike CFL that provides more light with a lower wattage rating. Using LCD monitors is a good idea. enjoy!

i ALSO BELIVE THAT ENERGY NEED TO BE SAVED RIGHT NOW TO REDUSE THE EXHAUTION OF NONRENUABLE RESORSES OF ENERGY . iF THIS IS NOT DONE THEN WORLD CAN BE IN A BIG DANGER.i AM USING SOLAR COOKER SO THIS A SMALL STEP TAKEN BY ME TO CONSERVE ENERGY.

I agree, people must exert extra effort to avoid depletion of non-renewable enery sources. Scientists say that fossil fuel is about to be depleted now because of too much drilling and huge amount of world consumption. Steps should be taken to avoid wastage. enjoy!

I use energy saving bulbs so that they last longer and consume less power. At the same time, I'd switch off all lights and fans if I am going out. Full load of clothes for washing machine is another good and practical energy saving measure.

Nice tips. Turning off lights and fans when not in use can easily be taken for granted. Doing this can really save a lot. The wasthing machine's motor also consumes lots of electricity especially when used everyday. good tips!

As a means of saving on our electricity bill and also saving energy itself, I started putting my air-conditioner on timer before I sleep, 5-7 hours and then it goes off whether I'm up or not. TV watching is on schedule and I turn it off when there's really nothing good on. My WIFI was always on 24/7 but I started turning it off when I go to sleep. Only 1 light is on in the living room, lights only turn on in a certain area/room when needed. So far it helped decrease our bill with a few hundreds, hopefully if we continue doing this then we could save a whole lot more.

I turn down the heat at night and try not to have the heat to high anyway. I unplug appliances when not in use, like the coffee maker, kitchen appliances, hairdryer, curling iron, phone chargers. Even though they are not being used I heard this can save some of our energy and also help with the cost. I turn off lights and use less lights. This past summer we tried not to use the air conditioner unless we really had to. I have not changed all my light bulbs, just a few but slowly working on this.

Yes, unplugging appliances which are not in use can also save because in many cases, they also consume electricity even when off. There are still circuits inside that consumes electricity minimal as it is, when add up altogether is also a lot. Most appliances with heaters or heating filaments are devouring power and must be used accordingly and wisely. enjoy!

not only should you turn appliances off when you are not using them, you should also turn them off at the wall and unplug them. reduce the amount of appliances you use and use them wisely. we dont own a microwave because we realised that we could survive without it. also, when we use the oven, we put more than one thing in there, saving the power you would only use later e.g. roast for dinner, cake for snack, chicken wings that can be eaten cold for lunch. when washing up, use the electric jug to fill the sick rather than the tap, it is a smaller element and uses much less energy. if you own your own house, plan to stay there and have savings, why not invest in solar power or hot water. itll save you heaps of money in the long run and is an extra incentive for buyers if you do ever sell your house.

yes, alternative energy sources are something to think about nowadays and are gaining attention. I have been thinking of solar power actually and also wind power. They are so abundant here and as far as I know, many are already using them. enjoy!

I drive my bike very slowly so that it consumes lesser petrol and also i concentrate on driving and do not use cluth and breaks unnecessarily. proper driving can save a lot. I also feel conservation of water is more important than energy.I use water very carefully. All tapes at home are checked every week for leakages and everyday for proper closing.

Yes, driving at a correct speed consumes fuel efficiently. Leaks in water taps are are often taken for granted by many but it is such a terrible waste not only of money but of precious natural resources. enjoy!

I was very worried about my bill, since the unit price of electricity went up here. I changed my lights to CFL's, and they consume little energy. I changed my fans, and bought fans with fibre blades rather than aluminium. They consume almost 1/3 of the previously consumed energy. I even put my machine to sleep, and try to light up my home with as little lighting as possible. This way, my monthly electricity bill has decreased a lot, and I'm happy.

We have changed our light bulbs to ones which are of low wattage, too. We also iron once a week and before ironing, we segregate clothes and fold them according to the kind of clothing so that time is not wasted while iron is on. If we need to sprinkle water on a particular type of cloth, we do it ahead, before we turn on the flat iron. We no longer use the garden hose in watering the plants. We get water from our manual pump. Our electric water pump is not used often. We only get to switch it on on particular days and in lieu, use the water pump. Faucet leaks cause additional wastage, so we make sure not a leak is present. Our water dispenser is shut off when we go to sleep. Sometimes, we shut off our refrigerator at night on certain days, especially where there is little food inside. I have thought of doing away with ironing so we can save a lot, but we cannot dare go out with crumpled clothes, lol.

Yes, turning the refrigerator off sometimes I think is a good idea. I often wear denims and I just drip them dry. I am not meticuluous in the way I dress up. Yes, I don't recall of a time in the evolution of fashions that crumpled ones became a trend. LOL

Don't use electrical appliances unless they're really necessary. I have a clothes dryer, but seldom use it. No dishwasher or rice cooker or electric knife or mixer or blanket or shaver or hair dryer... I do have a microwave and an electric skillet. Both of them take less electricity than the big stove. Don't go off and leave anything on if you're not using it. Don't open the door to the refrigerator unless it's necessary. Keep the freezer full and it will use less electricity.

i do everything you do,also i dont do laundry or run the dish washer until i can pack it full, and instead of running my pool filter 8 hours a day i drop an xtra chlorine tablet in and run it only 4 hours a day, and clean the filter out 3 times a week with a power nozzle on the garden hose. also i change my air conditioner filter the day i get my electric bill to make sure its clean and the motor doesnt get sluggish. thats only 48.00 per year for filters and 100's in savings.

hi manong I turn off my computer and monitor if I am going to leave the room for any long period of time. why waste the electricity even if I am only paying for it through my monthly 'rent here. also I do not leave lights on when I am not here. these are habits I have had when we had our own apartment as we had to cut down on our electric and gas bills. also I never left a gas burner on on our stove. little things do add up we also used those odd bulbs that are all screwed up they save a lot of energy. We also hardly ever used the airconditoner, just our fans most of the time. I find that here opening the windows seems so much easier to breathe the air then using the air conditioning, I am not so stuffed up with allergies good discussion,

Yes, when these little things add up, we will be surprised at how much savings we can have. I also open up windows many times and give my lungs a break. Good for the health. cheers!

I replaced all the my bulbs with the CFLs - in addition to the savings you don't have to change the bulbs very often. So that's a twofer for me. I also use nightlights so that we don't have to leave a hall light or lamp burning - they use much less energy and put out considerable light - I have them in every bathroom and the main hallways. I make sure to only do "full" loads of laundry and except for bed linens I wash in cold water. Try to make sure all unused lights are turned off and have outside lights on automatic "eyes" so that they only come on at dark and don't stay on all day because we forgot to turn them off.
