I have good news and a bad news, which would you want to hear first?

This topic was actually motivated by one of the mylot members who replied to my topic. It got me wondering. If you were told that statement, what would you pick first and why?
I'd probably go for the bad news first because what comes last would be that thing that would linger in my mind. So if he says the bad news is I broke a promise then the good news is I got $100k for it, then I'm sure I'd be glad he did break the promise right? On contrary though, if the bad news is far more devastating than the good news, then perhaps regardless which came first, I would still be affected. Like when the bad news is: I got cancer then the good news is: I got $1M, it may be good to have the $1M but still your friend/partners/family member would still die, right?
So perhaps it depends, no bad news would be welcomed mostly.
Anyhow, if you were asked, which would you choose first and why?

I would ask for the bad news first and always. I always have. I would rather be prepared and have a little pick me up for the good news.
I dread the "I have bad news and more bad news."

You are funny laydee! But you really have a point there . Well it depends really... but how would we know in the first place?
Well anyways, I think I will choose to hear the good news first so that I can enjoy thinking more about it without being bothered about the bad news that I learned before (if I have chosen to hear the bad news first). Once I am done and that good news sink in to me already, I think I will be prepared enough to hear the bad news...

It will be brushed off somehow... but the thing is, I enjoyed the good news more because I haven't heard the bad news yet... It is good to be happy when you're mind is not yet occupied with the bad news/ things that happened.

I would want to hear the bad news first, because if I hear the good news first, I am still lingering about the awaiting bad news, so I cannot feel happy about the good news. On the contrary, if the bad news falls within my control, I might at least partially appreciate the good news. Anyway, partial positive is better than none.

I'd always want the bad news first. Whatever I do in life, I like to get the worst things out of the way, so they're done with, and I have good things to look forward to. This applies to everything, and it applies to receiving news as well.

That's a good way of seeing things. I must say, you must be living a good life then with that sort of perspective of things. Keep it up! Thanks for sharing, I'll try to do the same - I'm more of a pessimist most of the times.
Have a great MyLot experience and apologies for the late reply.

When my hubby or anyone for that fact ask me would I like the good news or the bad news. I always ask to be told the bad news first. Because I wouldn't like to wonder what is going on. Normally though when my husband tells me he has good news and bad news its normally not so much bad news its just that he made a fluke and that we will have to make some adjustments.

I guess you're like most of us, we are so anxious to know the bad news that we don't care about the good news to be told first. Hehehe.. But heck, regardless which comes first, if the bad news is really very bad, I don't think I could ever remember the good news.
Thanks for the response, have a great mylot experience ahead!

hello laydee,
well, i guess i want to hear the negative news first than the positive. with high hope that the former is not too bad. i choose it that way so whatever is the bad news, maybe i'll be more relief and indeed will become happy and glad upon hearing the good one. is like watching in a black and white tv to colored one.
rather than being happy then sad. i will hardly cope up with my mood if that will be the case. in short, i have a bad day all day.

hi laydee a year ago this past summer I was having bad cramps in
mu tummy for a whole week so finally went to the doctor. as I had been hospitalized several months before with bleeding diverticulitis he was afraid it was diverticulitis again so he sent me to the ER when I called hime and told him Ihad broken out in blisters all over mytummy from a reaction to the antibiotic he had put me on. well once in the ER the Er doctor finally came in took one look at the half of my tummy covered with these hundreds of tiny blisters. He said, " I have good news and I have bad new.I said tell me the good, well He said you do not have diverticulitis,so we do not have to hospitalize you. The bad news you have shingles.well not having bleeding diverticulitis was indeed good news as that was very painful. but the bad news the shingles well let us just say I spent three months during the hottest pArt of the summer being zapped by nerve zaps so painful that I hAd to take antiviral medication all summer to stop most of the pain.I hope this never ever happens again.

Hah, very good question.
I would like to hear the bad news first because it is good when it ends well, isn't it? So, bad news first and after that good news.
because many times, I have seen bad news aren't that bad compared to good news, isn't ti?

I'd choose the bad news first. I'd probably just want to get that bit out of the way. If it's really bad, who cares about any kind of good news. If it wouldn't cancel out the good news, well it's a nuisance that you just get over with to focus on the really important thing.

True enough. I don't think the good could over shadow the bad if the bad is really that bad. And beside, I doubt anyone could appear happy when talking about the good news when deep down inside the bad news would really change a person's mood.
Thanks for the response. Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

I agree that sometimes bad news is good to hear first, so that you can appreciate the good news more. However, sometimes bad news is bad no matter how good the news is the comes after it. Honestly, I would prefer no bad at all lol.

Hi Laydee
I agreed with you...I like to hear the bad news firs and after the good news.when you here the bad news firs it will leave you bad taste to you,but after when you hear the good news.it will make you feel better. And like you said what comes last would be that thing that would linger in my mind.So i go for the bad news first and then the good news.

It practically doesn't matter as you described. But for me i would go for good news, so that i cheer up to the fullest coz the bad news if told first i wont be cheering to the fullest. good news for me always!!!

Hey, laydee, I'm the same as you, bad news first. And the reason is also similar. If I heard the bad news first, then no worse news following. And good news later would make my mood up. On contrary side, bad news would make me down. Because the latest news I get affect me more, I think.
