Reading Books Still Important?

I am wondering if reading books is still important for us and our modern life.
You see, if this question was asked about 10 years ago, I am sure that most people would have echoed a big “Yes!”. Compared with past time, nowadays, we have a pervasive alternative, called the Internet. If you wanted to get in-depth information about a certain topic 10 years ago, you would inevitably need to buy a book or visit a library. Today, you can access virtually all the information available to the human race without leaving your bedroom. All it takes is an Internet connection and a computer.
So, have you spent much time on the Internet? In your opinion, is reading books still necessary?

Hi getbrowser, Reading books is still a very popular pastime and I doubt if that will change anytime soon. While it's true that the Internet has brought great changes and information is readily available, it isn't the same as reading a book. Bookstores still do a brisk business and books are still very popular for gifts. As to whether this will change with the next generation, I guess we will just have to wait and see. Blessings.

I believe reading books is even more important than in the past. Although times are changing rapidly, learning to read is still a most important skill, and who knows when your Internet may not be available, like mine for the past ten days, there are always books around to pass the time.

if you want to read a good novel, you need to buy the book. you can't read a whole novel on the internet. i have written book reviews and movie reviews on writing sites, and i try not to give the book away. i just summarize the highlights of the book or novel, and why i thought it was interesting. then, i leave it to other people to decide if they want to buy the book and read it.

Reading books is still important. You develop imagination, language skills and a lot more. I know many would disagree, but I believe that reading books is important and I am sad that kids spend more time playing video games and watching television than they do reading.

First of all reading a book gives very good satisfaction. Online books you can read only by sitting in front of the computer. Mobile E-books cannot be read by senior citizens as the letters will be small. Paper book you can carry any where and sit any place and read, while waiting any where, in the bus, train etc. Though information is available in the internet, we do not read the book for only information right?

Yes, very true. Everything is spoon fed nowadays. If you want to search about Mesothelioma, just one tick and everything is there right in front of you. Kids these days are so lazy to open a book and research each and every article they need.
But I still love to read a book. Since I'm in front of the computer 80% of the time, my eyes get strained already. I still miss sitting under a tree or lying down on the couch and reading some novels.
I think it's a personal choice if you prefer to read in the computer. What if there's no electricity or your laptop has no battery... and not everyone owns a computer still. ^^

The influence of technology is such that people have lost the joy of reading. They all think you can get everything from electonics and reading is now an old time business. Reading has a pleasure of its own and its something people should teach their children. Without it children lose a lot and will never know the joy of good literature.

there are still cases where i find books easier to use, You can read books anywhere anyplace, you just bookmark and open it again, you can borrow books from the library and take it home, but you can not take home the computer, and not all people has computer or have access to a computer or internet, And in my case i still prefer reading from pages in a paper bound / book rather than in front of monitor. So when i have to read something long, i print it, it is not costly coz i have a continuous ink system. I feel like it a little more tiring for my eyes when i read long scripts from the computer.

This is a good discussion getbrowser, even though you can get all the information through the internet, we still read the newspapers as well as magazines. As far as I am concerned, I do not think the internet or watching TV will make to difference to me, and I shall always enjoy reading a book, a newspaper or a magazine.

Well... hmm...
I like reading books such as Twilight, House of Night series, Night World series, etc...
But when it comes to finding something - I look online. I am pretty sure that in schools the kids are taught the best way to do research online, and ways to verify that the site is giving accurate info, etc...
Although, I do wish that the kids were required to use books still while in school, they all use the internet.
I think that we read books for fun, but not for knowledge anymore. Which is kinda sad :(

Yes, reading books is still very important because there are excellent, useful books in the market today that contents cannot be read in the internet. I still collect books, make it as my primary sources and references for my writings and I still rely on books if I want to read a full length novel or biography or history.

Nowadays reading books is more or less a hobby.People who have liked to curl up with a book some years ago still do.Also in case of a job like mine which is accountancy a lot of referencing at various offices is still done through books.Even though computers are there and there is access to the internet, yet somehow people feel comfortable with leafing through a big tome in hand.I personally still love reading and still follow bestsellers at the local book store though I also use the internet a lot for reference purposes.

Oh yes, there are reading materials you cannot download in the computer. They are also good references though you're right, most of the books really of the latest edition can be read from the internet including novels. In this case everyone should have a computer specially students.
