Irritating: Convenience store clerk using the telephone

The main reason to go to a convenience store and pay the higher price they charge is that it is quick. So it irritates me when I come up to the counter and I have to wait to complete my purchase because the clerk is talking on the phone. They are on the job, being paid for their time, and should be spending their time working. Instead, they make personal phone calls and customers have to wait. If I managed that store and saw that happening, that clerk would change his ways or get an opportunity to find another job.

I work at a store and some of our calls are from other customers, vendors, the gas company...to change prices, the boss etc. Not all calls are personal. That being said, I do not pick up the phone when it rings if I have customers in front of me which irritates some customers who are trying to call. Equally annoying are the customers who come up to the counter texting or talking on their cells while you are trying to wait on them.

Sure, some calls are legitimate and must be taken--like from the boss! But most of the calls are personal. It is easy to tell from the look on the cashier's face. Some people seem to think it is a great job because they get to talk on the phone all day, with the occasional inconvenient customer complicating things.

You should complain to the boss when that happens. I'm serious. The store that I work in, we would get fired after too many customer complaints. Being friendly and polite is a big part of the job. Talking on the phone to friends is not at all ok even when we do not have customers in front of us. There is stocking to be done and cleaning etc. an occasional quick call is ok but my boss would be all over us if we got too many personal calls while at work. Oh and cell phones are to be shut off.

I agree with you, that is annoying.
They should have a little more respect for customers, thanks to them he has a job and gets paid.
