I want to go blonde. Good idea?

I'm turning 30 in Dec and want to have a bit of a change. I have always wanted blonde hair. Ive been every colour but blonde! I had long hair down to my back but last month got it all cut off so now its above my shoulders. Its easier to manage and now I think as theres not so much of it - i could try and go blonde. Thing is I already have a colour on - reddy brown. Would it be hard to go blonde? I would obviously go to a hairdressers to get it done right. Please let me know if this is going to work or if i would wind up turning myself ginger! Thanks
