I can, in no good conscience, call Scientology a religion. This is a cult.

There is more and more evidence everyday piling up against Scientology. The reason why is because most are against this group of people who dare call themselves a religion. On ABC's "Nightline" on October 22 and 23, 2009, there were two reports of abuse in this church and reports of the leader of this cult being completely out of his mind. So much out of his mind that he made Sea Org members salute his dog. Here is the latest report about how the Church of Scientology feels about homosexuality: http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movies.ap.org/crash39-director-paul-haggis-quits-scientology-ap This article also brings up, again, how people who leave the Church of Scientology cannot have any communication with family that are still in the church. Can anyone see that this is a true cult and not a religion?

I generally am the type of person to have that "Hey whatever works for you" attitude BUT I have to admit that though I dont see Scientology as a cult I certainly dont see it as a religion either...I more see it as a shady business more than anything....

"shady business" is a good description from what I read when I researched them a couple of years ago.. If they believe what they're teaching, they're also fruitcakes!

Okay, if you want to call it that. I still see it as a cult because of how they get people to join and what they do to people once they are in.

Sorry about that. I guess it has been taken off of Yahoo by now, but you can check out Scientology's website (granted that you can get in there) or their page on Wikipedia, and you can see how bad it is for yourself.

I read much from Wikipedia and I know that John Travolta is a Scientologist. I do believe in freedom of religion even if I don't agree with a religion. Remember that Christianity was at one time viewed as a cult.

You can always read more about them. See, I live in California, where this group is pretty big, and I have seen people try to get others to join Scientology. I was once approached by these people, and I said that I don't have any money and I am not religious, and they walked away. They basically brain wash people and take their money.

Of course it is a cult, however it is no more of a cult than any other religion. The only reason you are calling them out is for the extremity of their beliefs. I am a psychology major in college, and I have spent time writing several papers on the idea of brainwashing, cults, and religion all overlapping. There is no denying that in many religious circles (like Christianity) there are equally sketchy things occurring. The term cult is just used by people who do not believe in a particular belief to invoke fear into the public, so as to degrade the nature of the belief. In the USA, we are free to believe what we want. Christians can't see god, they can't prove god. Scientologist's believe in Xenu and all that other random crap. I don't really see a big significance if they're both protected under the law.

Sadly so. I have seen people come out of this "cult" and I have heard about the things that they do to people while they are in there, and I know that their are religions and cults that are bad, but it seems like this one is really taking the cake.

had taken up psychology as a college degree and cults is one of those things we studied. based from my academic and additional learnings it does take something more drastic and more recurrent episodes than the ones you mentioned for a group (not be called a cult but for a group) that has come to an end or almost coming to an end to be called a cult. however, that was then. am not that active anymore in that field of knowledge and maybe things are now different. but one thing is a classic. the world doesn't see it as a cult unless it has come to an end.

Scientologists are nuts. You saw what Tom Cruise did to Oprah's couch, that is typical of new members. Some members are brainwashed into believing some pretty crazy things and told not contact family members unless they are Scientologist. Also, they are told not seek psychological help or take any medication if they have any medical problems. The man who started this cult, L. Ron Hubbard even said in one of his novels, "If you want to make money, start a religion". What do you think that means? Type in Scientology on Yahoo search and on Wikipedia and see what you find. You will be amazed as to what you see.

Since I do not have much knowledge or experience with Scientology, I don't think I should make a direct comment about it. However, if you really think about it, all religions can be considered a cult in some way. As a matter of fact, Christianity was originally considered to be a cult until it became more popular.

You have a point, but I think that this one is the worst of them all.
