As the swine flu spreads will you continue to lick envelopes sent each month with your bills? I have a glue stick but keep forgetting to use it. Have seen some people use a damp sponge to wet envelopes. What will be your choice?

I really like the envelopes that have the tab you pull off and the self stick flap usually sticks down pretty good, I have for security used a piece of scotch tape but that usually isn't necessary. This is an excellent post, Thanks.

I don't receive bills every month. I started eBills on all my accounts a couple years ago. I pay all my bills online. I have an external hard drive where I save a copy of my bill & proof of payment. Before I went to this method, I always kept a damp paper towel next to me when paying bills. Not for fear of catching something, but because the glue tastes NASTY!!!

The glue taste doesn't bother me but need to use my glue stick which I have had forever. I don't pay any bills online. Want to see what exactly is leaving here and have found mistakes on my phone bill, etc. I make a call and it's eventually corrected. Might not see it or pay any attention if it was paid online. Plus don't trust giving out information online. It's just me because many people do pay bills online including our kids. Thanks for responding.

Three times this year something was added to my home phone bill. Had something to do with the internet which I did not order. Took a month each time to get it straightened out. Two other times I was charged for something one of our kids supposedly ordered online. I called her about it both times and she did not order anything under her maiden name at our address. That was another mess to handle. I am just anal about physically handling my bills at home and mailing.

I still look at my bills, I just don't get them in the mail. I download my bill to my external hard drive & then I look at it. Then I pay my bill. I make no long distance calls on my house phone so it's exactly the same every month. My cell phone is set up on one price covers all so it's exactly the same every month. My utility bill is the only place I can possibly have a problem & it always stays within $20 of last year's bill. When I look at my utility bill, it shows me what I paid on the same date last year. So, it's easy for me to see if anything is out of whack & I look immediately!!!

Hadn't really thought about that spreading germs. I suppose it does. I sometimes just put my finger on the faucet. Even without being on there is usually residual water for one envelope. For more than one, I have to lick or use a sponge. But I use email and so many other things that I seldom use an envelope any more.

Hi carolbee,
That is a good question, I wonder what others do, but for me I have also use selotape to seal it as I know that if you wet it, sometimes it can come unstuck, so selotape is the best thing for me.

Dear Carolbee,
I hardly send any mail nowadays. However, I normally
use glue stick since I read an article in an email
years ago. If we lick the envelope we may risk licking
any bacteria that on it. As envelopes are exposed to all
kinds of insects at the storeroom. Therefore it is not
hygienic to do so. At times I use the sponge that is
available at the post office.
thanks and do keep in touch!

Good question. I haven't exactly thought about it until you mentioned it just now. I always had the habit of licking the envelopes, but for a while now I've been taking a different and simple route.
Rather than licking the envelopes, I now just wet my finger with water from the faucet and apply it to the envelopes that way.
I know it's nothing unique or special, but I don't buy anything special for this task when I have something as simple and free as water to use.
I never thought of the 'glue stick' trick, that's a good idea. The dollar store should carry those for a dollar or two for a dollar. Bills never stop, so you'll need some type of plan to stick those envelopes.
