Why do men like to watch sports more than women?

Hello, everytime there's a ball game or any sports game on TV, men (in my case my father and brother) got excited and jump in to the sofas in front of TV. I personally got bired after a while when watching a sport game. I like to see the recap, though, because it only shows the goals and skips unimportant plays. Is it just me or men do like sports more than women? If so, why is that?

Well, your question actually only applies to general people.
In most cases, men like sports more than women (just look by the number of the athletes in the world, the composition of male and female athletes).
But there are many cases also where men don't like sports too much compared to women. There are a lot of women love to watch sports also. This nature depends on how they (women) were raised when they were child. If they were born as a member of family-athlete, usually they very like to watch sports. Other possibilities, they were raised as the only female member (with the mother) in the house and other family members are like to watch sports.

So it all depends on the habit in which a person was raised, huh?

Well... yeah!
I have a male friend, he likes to watch telenovela so much because her mother always watched a telenovela while taking care of him while he was young. it's very girly for most men, right?

I see. Human is like sponge then as they say as we absorb anything around us especially when we're young :)

I understand what you're saying. I think it starts at an early age. While guys are encouraged to watch and participate in sports, women are not, so much. I've always been a total tomboy and I love sports, not only to watch, but to participate in. Also, the popular sports are exclusively men participating.

Yes I think the habit of encouraging the boys pass on generation to generation. Good for you if you like to play sport! What kind of sport do you play?

As for me, I do not care that much for sports. I am sure that your father and brother are simply jsut excited to see there team win or score a point. I do think men are into sports more than women but I could be wroung.

Yes they do. They enjoy it so much. In our community here, it is a fact that more men watch sports than women. During a big game, the road is somewhat less crowded here, you know. Since many car drivers and motorcyclers are watching the game. LOL!

i think because this is one peaceful and decent way to see who is the manliest of all . i mean i guess it is human nature to prove he is the best in one field and i believe if given the chance the men watching that particular would be playing the sport they're watching if given the time, physique and most of all prowess and talent for that sport .

Men see sports vicariously. The relive the moments of their youth when things were interesting. When they could be the hero. When they could 'win' the game.
This is also why men tend to get hooked on video games. They really can win in the video game. They can be the knight in shining armor who defeats the evil dragon. Or the super hero, who defeats the evil master criminal.
Whereas life otherwise tends to be rather dull and boring. Get up, go to work, come home, sleep, repeat. What are you doing tomorrow? Well I thought I'd get up, and do some work, come home and then go to bed. What about you?
For example, I make electronic boards as my job. How do I do this? I press a button on a machine, and watch it work. When it spits out a board, I check it, and push it into the oven to bake. When the machine runs out of parts, I feed it more.
Exciting isn't it? A trained monkey could likely do as good a job. So, in order to escape the pathetic worthless boringness of my life, I play video games. There, in the video game world, I can win! I can be the hero! I can save the girl, defeat the monster, and so on. Life can be interesting in a video game.
Similarly, this is why men like sports. It's an escape from the boring-ness of life.

You got a point. I think that because most men works in the office with little or no excitement at all, they got really excited watching sports because it reminds them of the old days. So you're a sports fan too?

No, not me. I find sports boring because *I* am not doing anything. Someone else scored, not me. But others enjoy that.
Me, I am a video game player. I save the girl, kill the dragon, defeat the enemy. I play games to enjoy the idea that I'm actually accomplishing something. Even though in reality, wining a video game doesn't accomplish anything.
But that's how I escape the poor boredom of life.

History tells us that man provides all the work for his family. Old sports was generated to show mans power, strength, speed and cleverness. You can see that in the history of early Olympic games. They are originally intended for men, thats why its the men who watch them. Women in the old days are lock in their homes and never participated in public occasions. Had to admit that our old folks made the wrong decision on this one, right?

That explains the recent changes where women now like sports too, eventhough more men watch sports than women.

I don't think that all men are like this, but some are. I am a woman, and don't like to watch sports unless it's rodeo, or gladiator, the mxe games, or bike / skateboard jumps. Even so I don't make a point to watch it unless it's a marathon for like mxe games.

well when i first read your question i definitely had to respond. because i am female and I love to watch sports. Every play within a game is important. So that i felt was innacurrate. Sports are a good thing to watch and is a great past time for both females and males. some women dont like sports, and i think that is sad if you have a husband that likes them becuase that is time youare missing out with them.

Hello, there are many mylotters here that like to watch sports game like you. We con't say that it's only males game. Statistically speaking though, there are more men than women that watch sports in the world. So this discussion was created to find out what the myLotters have to say about the reason why. What was innacurrate if I may ask?

every play of a game is important. one play leads to the next and the next to lead up to a touchdown, or goal, or homerun, or whatever you wanna say. if you get bored you get bored and thats fine. but i dont see how youcan get bored watching a game of a sport you like, but then watch the recap and enjoy it...

Hi. I'm a woman who loves to watch sports. I watch the NBA particularly. Anyway, I guess men are more competitive in nature when it comes to showing off strength and agility than women. I guess, it is all in the hormones . Testosterone is usually high when people watch sports and since men are more wired to testosterone, they get all riled up when they watch sports.

Men is all about physicality and test of strength. Sports is the only legal way to test ones strength and also most likely to give information on how others handle things in sports. Women are gentle being and usually loves music and melodramatic things

Yes I read it's good for their ego something.
LOL! You said that sport is the only legal way, right? Does it mean you know other illegal way to test it? :p

i don't know, maybe beacause men like to see what they want to become in a future, muscles, easy succes, and other things, also the feaver to stay with friends and screaming to the gamers. Here in italy the 99,9% of men like soccer, and for them this thake the 90% of a conversation witho their friends, the other 10% are insult or other stupid things. i'm a man , i'am 19 years old, and i don't like this "famous" sports like soccer basket or football, i like the bow competitions, and airsoft,( or softair). some sports that one can enjoy and there are no money behind them, we are all friends.

Italy was recently the champion of FIFA world cup, right? I bet everyone there likes soccer. It surprises me that you don't although I get your reason that sport like that is sometimes just about fighting for something called money.

I have seen that men watch sports more compared to women. I don't know that reson for that. All of us at my home are intersted in sports, but my Dad and brother are two people who can never miss a cricket match. We, the women team, started watching sports because the men team wants to watch that. Cricket is my favorite sport.

Really? I think more men watch wrestling than women. It's actually one of the sports that I hate the most because of the violence acts they categorized into sport.

Yup I totally agree with you. Men do like sport more than women. Women prefer the "milder" side of life such as ballet, knitting, gymnastics, child care, etc. While men are excited by sports competition to prove to themselves who's the better man amongst them. Most sports are made for men but I noticed that more sports have their female counterparts nowadays. So, probably by the century, more women will be engaged in sports.

Yes they even have the national team for women sports . I find it odd, though seeing those women fighting like men. No offense..
