To Read or To Be Read To That is the Question.

I know that a lot of people like to read, and I have seen several people on mylot starting discussions about books and authors, and it got me to thinking,I am a big fan of reading, and I used to read a lot when I was a kid,but when I got older I found out I have like ADD so it made it hard for me to read since I could not focus or remember what I was reading so I stopped until I met my wife, and then she started reading to me,which made it easy to focus, and remember what happened, and I loved her reading to me,except there were times when she would want to read and I would not,so I decided to try reading to myself and I found if I read books that interest me like James Patterson books then I can focus, especially books about murder, and I like that James Patterson's books have really short chapters which helps a lot,and now I really enjoy reading again, except I have not read in a while because my job keeps me busy, and whenever I am not working,me and my wife are trying to get chores and other things done, but I still like her reading to me especially books that I think I would have trouble reading myself,so my questions are Do you prefer to be read to?If so, are there certain types of books?Who do you like reading to you?If not, then why do you prefer to read yourself?I want to thank all mylotters in advance for their responses, and I hope everyone treats this discussion seriously, and I will do the same when I am commenting back,Happy Mylotting.

It is a little difficult for me to foucus on the content when sb else read it to me.Also I can't have a fully imagination and undstanding about the content. I like to read some mystery and suspense novel. And as a young girl ,once I was crazy about the romantic fiction. eh,hellcoeboy and somecowgirl, you two are so sweet.Hope you two happy everyday.

I am not sure but for some reason I tend to be able to comprehend more when I am read to, if I am not being read to I tend to let my mind wander,I enjoy suspense and mystery books and think that they are best when read by someone else,it makes them more suspenseful or mysterious and gives an element that is nice, and very fun as well as a bit scary, yes myself and Somecowgirl recently got married,we qre very much in love, thank you for the well wishes, thanks for responding.

Hi hellcowboy, nobody ever read aloud any books to me. So I dont really know whether I would like somebody to read something aloud for me, or who that person would be. Likewise, so far, I have not read aloud any books or articles for anybody, except when I was young, and one of the elders had alzhiemers and he liked somebody to read the newspaper aloud to him. Well, rest of the people were better at reading, so I kind of suffered with inferiority complex about reading aloud. And the discussion title u've chosen is very good. Something similar to Hamlet. :) And before I forget, thanks for letting me know about short chapters in James Patterson's books. I will try to read some of his books. :)

Hi! I like reading to myself and reading to others. I would prefer not to be read to. I like being able to have that time to myself, and the feeling of escaping this time for the story in a good book. I also like reading James Patterson books, along with others. I like getting engrossed in a good story, and imagining what the characters look like, and how the story is going to unfold. Reading a good book gives me time to escape the everyday hum drum.

That is good, and I agree books can help us escape from the everyday hum dum as you put it lol,and I also like imagining the characters and where I think the story is going to go, even though with James Patterson it never turns out the way you think it will.

I prefer to read paperbacks, and treat reading as a solitary activity. I dont understand what's so fun about reading aloud, after all you can't ask someone to stop reading when you want to think. I have a bad habit when reading thrillers. I always like to turn to the last chapter to find out what's happened.

I prefer to read hard cover books because they are easier to read and you can use the cover as a bookmark,,and that is true you can not ask someone to stop reading when you want to think, and my wife has a bad habit of looking ahead to see what is going to happen which I do not understand why anyone would want to do that because it spoils the book if you look at the end, thanks for responding.

Hi Hellcowboy, I love reading but only if I can read to myself. I have trouble with people reading to me , I don't seem to be able to enjoy the book as much and sometimes their voice intonations may not match what is going on in the book. For example, if there is a murder going on and the character is yelling but the person reading the book may be monotone, it takes away from the images and sounds I have when I read a book to myself. I don't mind reading out-loud to someone because I tend to read it as if it were a movie. Other types of books that are serious or non-fiction, I definitely need to read to myself to understand the meaning. Even reading it out-loud will not help me because when I am reading it out-loud, I will concentrate on making sure the words are being pronounced correctly and worried about how I sound, that I may lose the meaning of the text. For you there may be another alternative to having a live person read to you, maybe you could try to get the audio books. These I can listen to (but I still prefer reading myself) They are great. They are usually read by actors or actresses and you can really get into listening to them as they read the story.

I like to read more than to be read to. My imagination works better when I read alone.

I'm the opposite to you, I find it hard to focus if someone reads to me, I have to read to understand something fully. If anyone asks me to help with a crossword puzzle, I need to be the one reading out the clues. I used to love being read to when I was a child though, I think we all did. I have a friend who loves audio books but it's something I've never been interested in, maybe you should look for some for when somecowgirl is too busy to read to you.

Honey, You know that I enjoy reading to you, and I also enjoy reading to myself. I would like for you to read to me more as well, but I know that you don't like reading out loud. To be honest, reading out loud makes my mouth dry faster, but that's okay because I love reading to you. I know I need to start reading to you again but I also need to study for my permit. I love you.
