An active listener is attentative and pays attention to the person who is talking. An active listener will stop everything that they are doing and give the person talking their undivided attention without any distractions. While a listener only hears what is being said and does things while the person is talking. A listener will text, watch tv, talk to someone else, write, and etc. and not give the person talking their full attention. It is important to be an active listener, because you might miss very valuable information that could be essential to what you are doing or where you are going. Practicing being an active listener will help one to pay attention to details and understand things better and reduce repetative questions and answers.

Being an active listener means that you are giving direct eye contact and the other person can obviously see that you are paying attention and tuning into what they have to say. By the same token, they should return the favour and listen to you by giving you direct eye contact, this makes for a susteined conversation and both parties are contributing. When I am talking to someone I would describe myself as an active listener and I always give direct eye contact. This is important and it's polite too. Andrew

I'm listening! Sounds like venting to me. Were you talking and someone wasn't paying attention to you! I would think an active listener would also provide some feed back every now and then to let the person rambling on that, they're semi paying attention, you know like a nod of the head in agreement every few seconds, that used to work with my second wife! tdemex
