Me and my wife have been reading books in the Emigrant series by Vilhelm Moberg and they are about Swedish Immigrants to leave home in search of better lives in America and me and my wife need to get the rest of the books in the series so we can find out what happens and it got me to thinking that if I was an Immigrant back then and I could only take five things with me to another country I would want to take my clothes so I would have something to wear,I would take what little food I had so me and my family would have something to eat,I would also take water so me and my family would have something to drink,I would take whatever money I had so I would be able to exchange it for foreign currency when we got wherever we were going, and last I would take some farming tools,so that way we could start a garden when we got where we were going so we would have food, especially when it came to the Winter because I would not want my family to starve since it seemed hard to survive the Winter back in the eighteen hundreds,so my questions are if you were an Immigrant in the eighteen hundreds what five things would you choose to take with you?Why would you choose those things?Would you have been afraid to travel back then?Would you have been afraid of going to a new country?I hope that mylotters enjoy this discussion and have fun responding, but please try to be a bit serious,or at least stay on topic,Happy Mylotting.

I would imagine it to be very difficult and also very scary to travel to a foreign country in the 1800's. I imagine that it was a must if one could afford to because of situations in regards to land. I know in the book the land that the family was on was small, and had been tilled etc, but had many rocks and could no longer harvest. They moved to a new country to seek out new opportunities, but we haven't read the next book to know if they finally settled in to their new home.
I think that I would bring Farming Tools, Vegetables or Fruit for nourishment along the way, Seeds from trees that I enjoyed in my old country, Heirlooms, blankets, and medicine... That is six things, but I thought medicine would be a must so that one could make sure they didn't get seasick, or be able to cure their ailments from long travel in the new country.

Those are some good things to bring, and I did not think about medicine and I agree it would be essential to stop people from getting seasick, thanks for responding,I love you.

Yes, medicine would really be a great thing to bring. I know it's not someone usually thinks of unless they are taking prescription medicine or NSAIDS every day.
