Just heard on the news that in my area police can have child abusers that are on probations and on The List keep their lights out on Halloween. The law reads that child abusers must not 'interact' with children. What are your thoughts? How can we be asured that our kids or the doors they knock on are not those of child abusers? They used to have those sign they put on their lawns. Did you hear about those?

I would never let my children go out knocking on peoples door without me or my husband being with them as like you say you never know what kind of person is going to open the door.Alot of people that do not want other people to knock tend to put a sign up which the police have that they issue to the elderly as well as the vonrable.

I must say that in my day it was alittle different. My mom and my grandmother knew all the people in the neighborhood so it wasn't a problem for us to go out alone. It is alot different today.

I think it would be a good idea to make abusers keep their lights off on Halloween, and police should do drive-bys to make sure that they comply with this.
Another way to ensure the safety of our children is to go trick-or-treating with them. We always did and still do. We dress up, too, so that we are not as conspicuous and embarrassing as the kids get older, although I guess that having your parents dress up for Halloween might be embarrassing to some kids. We never thought it was embarrassing when we were growing up, though, and our kids have never objected, either.

Me too! All of our family enjoys Halloween so it doesn't bother the kids at all to have go along with them.

Yes, I agree. Most areas don't have enough manpower but they out and that is what's important. I think a lot of times just have them seen out is enough.

Hey celtic! No, I have never heard of signs put out! I thought
that there is a law that child abusers can't even live in a
neighborhood where there are children living! I know that where
I live there is a certain limit, I think miles or something
like that! There was a child molester who had gotten out of jail
and moved back in with his family right up the street from me
and was made to move and isn't allowed to even visit his family
because where I live we are in a school district, meaning there
is a school in the neighborhood. I know that every state has
a different law. But, children shouldn't go out without their
parents if they are very young and the older ones should go out
in groups and shouldn't be out too late at night! The would is
just too messed and there are just too many bad things happening
to children these days to take chances! It's just not worth it
for some candy!

Hey Op'! I am not sure what all the rules and laws are for the ones in my area. They used to be pretty strict and there was usually something in the news but not as much now days. We do hear something every year on the news. I don't worry too much about it because my daughter loves the holiday and is always out with my grandson and when my granddaughter is here she goes too. Two strong and out spoken gals makes me not too worried.

I think we should be more concerned about the safety of the children with the increasing rate of kidnapping and abduction. Adults should accompany the kids, kids should not enter into peoples homes especialy strangers, they should go in groups and should make sure candies are good befor eating them Happy Halloween

Best bet IMO is if you live in the U.S doing a search on somewhere like Watchdog I believe its called, for the neighbourhood you'll be takng your kids around and finding otu where any registered offenders live would be a good place to start..

Do you think many mothers will take the time to do this though?

I think that really someone should be there to monitor the child abuser if need be. I think that the idea of keeping their lights off is a good one, and I think I've heard of the sign in the yard, but I'm not completely sure.
In any case, I hope this helps to keep child abuser's away. They should not be allowed to leave the home either as they could always try to grab a child outside of their neighborhood.

I haven't heard about the signs but I have checked out the local registry for child offenders. I actually have a couple that live kind of close that make me a little nervous. The registry actaully shows addresses and maps it out for you.

Ya, in my locale they did the signs one year but haven't continued it. I think we have a site here locally that we can go to that is much like the one you speak of.
