Is facebook and myspace safe?

I have been reading that more and more people are getting their private information stolen while using facebook and myspace. There are links posted that say they are from a friend but when you click one them you can get a virus. Why can't people just leave everyone alone. Why do I have to double and triple check everything that I want to look at. It is becoming very annoying to me. I think the problem is even worse for the older generation, half of them don't really know how to use a computer that well and when get on line they don't know what is safe to click and what will crash their computer.
