Why do people go to therapy?

I understand therapy helps a lot of people with a lot of problems, but I don't understand how it works. You literally walk in, sit down and have a stranger ask you dozens and dozens of personal questions and for some reason people walk away from that feeling better and willing to spend a few dollars for each question they answer. How exactly does therapy help anyone with anything?

Some people, whilst talking about their problems, feel like the weight has been lifted off of them. However others may have epiphany's which end up changing their lives because of the way they then think and act. Doesn't always work with everyone though.
