Would humanity be better if we didn't have the ability to filter our thoughts?

Most humans have the ability to filter their thoughts meaning they can decide what to say or not to say. I was watching an episode of House last night and a man had a condition that made him lost that ability. Whatever he thought, he would say it in its unfiltered form. Would humanity be better if this was true for everyone? This would mean no more lying and the real personality will come out. To me this sounds great. What say you? Would this be a dream come true or a nightmare?

i'd imagine this would be a nightmare...i think free will is one of God's greatest gift to mankind. Have you seen the movie "Liar, Liar" with Jim Carey on it? - that came into my mind when I read your question. If we lose the ability to filter our thoughts I'd imagine a lot will lose their jobs, their wives, and maybe even their friends. White lies have been very helpful you know...

I like that you bring up relationships and it makes me think. If the relationship would be affect negatively because of the truth, then is that a healthy relationship? If it is based on a lie, wouldn't be better if that came to light and then decide if the relationship should continue or not? I always hear, "We broke up because [the other person] wasn't who I thought they were.", well if the filter were to be removed, everyone would show who they really are.

Thoughts come really fast and they are not always appropriate. If we start talking without filtering the unneeded ones, it can create inconvenient situations. As they say, you can't put the words back in your mouth. Once they are out, they are free! Thoughts are combination of personality and other things. I have been raised in a very good family, quite polite one. But where I reside now, foul words are common. Apparently these words come to my mind as well, but they are filtered out. And that's a GOOD thing. Besides, even if I used them, never think that will represent my true self. It's not so easy to judge by words only, filtered or not filtered..

I think that overall it would be a nightmare. If you only looked at this from a truth/lie perspective and if all people had a good heart then all would be well and good. But not all people are so good and what you would hear from some you would rather not. Some people, if not most, offend easily and it would not be long and the fight would be on. Sure we at least know what is really one someone else's mind but like I said there are some things we are better off not knowing.

that will mean we dont need to change at all if we are so tactful. it will be boring if everybody was like that. all careful with what they are saying. we need each other inorder to know who we are.

Have you heard of the well-meaning Lie, sometimes the true will hurt more serious, and everyone should have their secret, filter or not is not the key point to effect the humanity, it should be our heart.

i think it would be a lot worse... i mean it would be hard for us to keep our jobs if we always told our boss excatly what we think of him/her

Honestly, I don't think it would be better. I actually think it would be worse because even though there is a saying that stick and stones may break my bones but words will not hurt me, in reality, words do hurt a lot and it really matters in our society so I think everyone should choose their words carefully and be respectful and mindful of each and everyone's feelings.
