People should be discouraged from buying trucks/SUVs Do you agree?

Trucks and large SUVs are much heavier than other cars, so take longer to stop and in an accident cause much more damage to other cars due to their weight, causing more people to die.
Also as they are higher up, their point of impact on a car will be around window height rather than lower down, this is a weaker point on the car, and an SUV/truck will do more damage, further increasing the liklihood of killing someone.
Then, obviously they use more fuel, polluting the environment more for everyone.
Also, they have a higher chance of rollover in a crash, which could kill the occupants.

Sorry you feel this way but that is how we make a living we do own a truck. Any other vehicle wouldn't be sensible for us. We do a lot of yard work and carpenter work. We have to carry all kinds of materials which wouldn't be able to be carried in a car. We have to go on a lot of dirt roads for our business and a car isn't something you would want to be driving in when you come to a stream that is a little too high for a car. They are no worse then the driver. The driver of any vehicle is the one that causes accidents not the vehicle. And a truck don't pollute more then a car unless it is a diesel. But then they do make diesel cars too. So a gas running vehicle is not as likely to pollute. I would rather be in our truck if in a vehicle then in a car.

I don't care what you or anyone else says there is no such thing as global warming. If you don't believe that then read your bible it says there will always be hot and cold. And if that don't convince you watch www.shepherd'schapel.com and write into that preacher and he will give you the verse that it says that in the bible.

I think a lot of people buy them as nothing more than status symbols which makes no sense to me. We only have one planet--we all need to share it. SUV drivers contribute more than their fair share of greenhouse emissions just to look cool. Grow up slightly please. The human race is depending on people to do that.

It's about time the US had a more sensible policy on taxation of gas. Its the lowest out of every developed economy in the world. Gas costs more than twice as much everywhere in Europe and Japan. Its also taxed higher than the USA in countries where the population are much more spread out like Canada and Australia. Interestingly the developed country with the highest gas prices is Norway, which has a similar population density to the USA, including mountainous areas. This kind of throws out the argument that the USA needs cheap gas because its population is spread out.

It is so much better to have a large truck than a car. A truck is higher up and is safer. So many cars these days are poorly made and unsafe. I would not drive across the street in some of these modern cars. Also, many people work outside and need a truck to carry things for their job.

wow.. this is so interesting.. i never thought about these facts about SUV or trucks.. seems like it we all be discouraged when buying those vehicles accrding to these facts... burning more fuel is a major problem as we all know the enviromental pollution is getting worse and worse..

As you pointed out in you discussion, Trucks and SUV's are obviously safer then cars. DO yo drive a race car or something? I live in Wisconsin and we have some of the snowiest, iciest, and coldest winters around. I just bought a 2004 blazer and I am thrilled that it will be an easier winter for me. People do not buy cars or trucks because of their weight or size. They also do not by them thinking about the other driver on the road, that for all we know could be a drunk. I think it has alot to do with the driver when talking about accidents.

I wasn't really meaning people like you who actually need 4wd and higher ground clearance. You could argue a smaller turbo diesel engine would be more appropriate though (higher torque, higher fuel economy) but thats a different topic.
Actually its not obvious, they're only usually safer in collisions with other smaller vehicles. Colliding with stationary objects ie walls barriers posts, parked cars, they are no safer, and often worse. Also the risk of rollover is higher.
And that was kind of the point that people do only think about their own safety when choosing a car. Your safety on the road is affected by the vehicles everyone else chooses, but they dont consider your safety when choosing them. Imagine if everyone drove tanks, you'd be pretty scared driving round.
Im not really sure what youre trying to say at the end there, are you saying its ok to kill drink drivers?
