How many Christmas gifts will be under your tree this year?

Hi, all! I was browsing through last year's Christmas photos and there was one photo of our Christmas tree... It was skinny, but with so many gifts underneath! If I am not mistaken there were about 50 of them!! So, who received the most?? Of course, the nephews and niece... There are only 3 of them!!

We have a small family and aside from the toys that ‘Santa’ will bring for my daughter on Christmas night there will only be around ten gifts under the tree and that is just fine with me because we don’t have a lot of money for Christmas shopping. I usually buy for my daughter, my parents, my sister, my niece and two of my friends and their kids. I am thankful there are no more people! My husband’s family lives on the other side of the country and there are lot of them because my hubby has five brothers and sisters and they are all married with kids so what we do is each draw a name and just buy for that person.

The system is that everybody's name will be drawn out by someone so that everyone gets a gift. It works well, you buy a gift and you receive a gift.

I know what you mean. The bigger the family are, the more we have to spend on the Christmas gifts. However, all of the gifts do not have to be expensive. I think as long as we 'give' something like food, that will be enough as we have to think of the expenses as well as this season is also not about spending away the money. So, you have a system on who will be the lucky person, which is kind of fun. I hope the other kids whose names do not come up won't feel bad, but of course, they will receive gifts from the others, right?!

Oh yes, I am very familiar with the system. That was what we did in my past working places for exchange gifts. You just gave me a pretty good idea for my next discussion. Thanks, Paula!

Last year was the first year that Christmas was really kind of tight. We usually have presents all over the place. But no one really has extra money, so last year I just told everyone that the extended family exchange was being called off. We instead did a White Elephant exchange, which is fun. Everyone brings and wraps 2-3 inexpensive gifts and we draw numbers. The first person picks and unwraps. The 2nd person then picks and can keep what they have or trade with number 1. Then the 3rd person picks and can trade with 1 or 2 and so on. It can get pretty cut-throat, but it's always a good time. Hopefully next year money won't be so tight and I can afford to spend a bit more.

So, you can trade the gifts? That sounds like fun, but did you mix the gifts for children as well?? I guess kids are particular when it comes to gifts. If they get something they don't like, they will be upset. Oh, you meant to say 'this' year, right? Yeah, I hope money won't be so much a problem, but I also hope that everyone can still celebrate with hopes and loves even though money is tight.

I can't actually say how many is going to be under tree this year. My budget is tight I have to make it look like theres alot by wrapping some of the stuff individually except together. But I do know that my youngest(daughter) will be the one with the most especially after I get everything off of layway.

Everybody seems to have tight budget for the upcoming Christmas due to the economic downturn. I guess we just plan wisely and enjoy the season without feeling stress out about the gifts, just buy something reasonable and not over the budget. It might sound cliché, but the thoughts really count. Have a magical Christmas to you!

I have one of those three inch plastic trees that doesn't fit any presents underneath but the presents didn't exceed ten last year so its probably the same this year. Your tree must have been quiet a sight.

Three inches tree, awww that's cute! I am thinking of getting one of those cute trees for my bedroom. Oh, I have posted a picture of that Christmas tree above. It was taken at my eldest sister's condo and the tree was short and skinny. The one at our home is about 6 feet only, but usually we would bring all the gifts to my sis's place on Christmas Eve. Most probably, this year will be at our/parents' house.

I celebrate christmas Eve with my parents, my brother and my grandmother and there are usually a lot of presents under the tree. When my brother and I were younger my received most of the presents, but now my grandmother is the person who receives the most! Her family is very large, and she receives presents from her sons, her grandchildren, her grandchildren's boyfriends and girlsfriends and her great-grandchildren. When the rest of us have opened all of our presents, my grandmother still has some presents left, because she receives so many presents

Hi, Porcospino! I understand what you mean! Now my parents receive the most gifts as well besides the nephews and niece. So, she would always be the last person to finish unwrapping her presents? He he... That's lovely, everybody will just wait and see what she receives and usually will comment on it, right?! Anyway, thanks for responding and have a great day!

There were a few last year and there will be a few this year. Money has been so tight lately with my husband only working part-time and I am currently out of a job, but I am trying to save as much money as possible. I have been selling things of mine I no longer want such as my old jewelry (I sold this to cash for gold) and I do three different kinds of surveys where I get paid a little extra.

I am not sure if my income for this month could cover all the expenses I have planned for Christmas, but I am like you. I will try to save and refrain myself from buying unnecessary things so that I have more than enough for Christmas. I hope you will get more opportunities on the online surveys you are currently doing and earn a little bit more so that you will be able to have some extra cash for this season. All the best!

There will be a lot because I try to do something small for each of my students, and they like to give me something small too. I have a lot of family, and my husband's mother likes to give us a ton of gifts. So in all, there will be a lot of gifts under the tree.

There weren't a lot of gifts under our tree last year. We had a pretty small tree and only my mother and I exchanged gifts. I got quite a few gifts last year because we were able to pick up quite a few items for cheap that we had wanted. I really do miss the larger Christmases where everyone was excited and into the holiday.

Well, I think it all depends on the number of people in one's family as well as the participation and most importantly, the budget. I always want to make something so that everyone will feel excited about Christmas, but I will also remind myself not to spend on something that is not necessary. So, this year will you be exchanged gifts with your mother??

i start christmas shopping pretty much right after the previous christmas so i have quite a few gifts already. due to finances (hubby lost his job in august) christmas gifts will be a bit slimmer this year andi have had to be creative when it comes to gifts, plus i have been making some.

I have never done and thought about that, shopping for next Christmas after another... Good idea, but well, I am always a last-minute shopper. Sorry about your hubby, with the financial difficulties I think what you did then was really worth it. At least you have prepared some gifts earlier. I will also spend less on gifts this year because our budget is also tight and I don't want to look for expensive gifts, as long as everybody receives something especially my niece and nephews, that will make me happy already. I agree with you about being creative. I have been thinking of designing my own Christmas cards as well, at least I can still save a few dollars on something else.

The first thought when I read yur title was 'I'm not even sure if I will be having a tree this year' I don't have a real one for several years now as my place is really too small. I have one of those fake ones that I go and get from the basement and put it up each year but this year... well it just might be a wee bit different. I will inform as the weeks go past at the holidays approach

We never even had a live tree before. We only use the artificial one and I guess that's more than enough. I just love to sit and watch the color lights on the Christmas tree... Oh, your statement really makes me wonder why this year would be a little different... Maybe you can tell me later on if you want to share or you can start another discussion on this matter. Whatever it is, I hope it is not something bad...

hi corrycrystal well as I am now here int this Gold Crest Retirement center there will be a communal tree but no presents under it for me or by me. Last Christmas I spent here with my son visiting me, and we had maybe four presents apiece, and those from my best friend Nelda as I didn't have enough money at that time to buy anything , and was too down hearted to even care. this year I am happier but still stuck here and my Christmas shopping will be very slim as I have still very little money after rent and board are paid. but will get a few things just for my son, and my best friend.See there are a lot of people badly hurt by this horrid economy and we do not have the luxury most have of spending our heads off with a zillion gifts.

Hi, Hatley! I never knew that about you because I am just getting to know you... We've been affected by the economic downturn as well. We have to spend according to budget and even though I am planning to buy lots of gifts at least for everybody in the family especially for my niece and nephews, but I will find something that will not cost me much. I've been talking about that with my hubby because he is worried about the expenses as well. So, I could understand your situation *hugs* because right now I have very little money as well and I have been trying to save and keep myself from touching the money and spending unnecessarily. Anyway, I hope next year will be much much better for us.

I tend to try to make my Christmas tree full this year. I have been getting gifts from other places I earn online. It helps me out a great deal for Christmas gifts. One year we had 3 trees full of Christmas gifts for my kids and husband. You should have seen the kids eyes when they had so many gifts.

Wow, you had three trees full of Christmas gifts?? Yeah, I could imagine their reactions when they saw plenty of gifts waiting for them. Normally, they are the happiest persons during this joyous season and all they are waiting for is the time to unwrap all those gifts. It's interesting to know that you have actually earned many things online. It's a great idea as you can really save a lot. I hope our tree will be as merrier as last year and years before.

Usually we have more much more than 50 gifts every year because there are many people here. I hope we have lots of gifts this year too. I would be buying everyone gifts soon.

More than 50 gifts means you have a very big family and that's why you have to start your gifts hunting soon. I have at least 15 gifts to give away to my hubby and family members, but I hope I can find something that are reasonable and appropriate. I guess I will do my shopping in December as I tend to be a last-minute shopper.

Wow, How I wish there are many presents under my Christmas Tree too! We only have like 10 Christmas gifts under the X'mas tree. Most of them are for my son. I like to see his eyes sparkling as he admiring those gifts which his name written on it. At times he will pick them up and shake a bit. Try to guess what is it inside it Merry Christmas to you and family.

Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones too, Iriene! There are at least 13 of us in the family, so, we would exchange gifts and of course, the nephews and niece will receive the most gifts. However, we don't want to burden our parents, so, we will be happy just to buy them gifts and they don't have to get something for us, but my mom sometimes would still do it. I know what you mean about the kids, holding and shaking the gifts, trying to figure out what's inside! My nephews and niece always do like that and sometimes we would remind them that they would break the things inside so that they would stop doing that, but instead that would only make them curious!! So, the wrappers sometimes didn't look nice already because too many hands!!
