How fast do you eat your meals?

Indonesia

Hello everyone! This question hit my mind and I think it's gonna be interesting to see how fast we eat our meals. Personally, I eat my lunch for less than half an hour. I usually eat them in college while taking a break. I eat fast because I have so much things to do in college. I'd like to enjoy lunch more, though, sometimes. I hate to be eating in a rush, actually. Oh about breakfast, maybe 5 minutes because I usually take bread for breakfast with milk. At dinner I eat with my family. So we chat while eating our dinner, basically about our life that day. So we spend around an hour to finish dinner. Well, enough about me. What about you?

When eating at the restaurant, we tend to spend more tie in our meals compare to eating at home. I don't think eating while watching television is good for us, especially for kids. My friend always has tough time feeding her 3 year old son. He takes at least 1 hour to finish his meal. If happen he eat and watch television, he will takes up to 3 hours for his meal.

It's true, we eat slower while watching television. I think it's best we finish our dinner first and then at night we could have snack while watching them. :)

My husband and I drink a slim fast drink for breakfast, and that usually takes us five minutes unless we're talking. Though I usually get up before he, so i'm usually done with mine before he gets up. Now for lunch, there are times he'll be at work, so I'll just eat a yogurt, he eats fast whilst talking to me on the phone. For dinner we also eat quite fast, I don't know why, it's just something that we tend to do. We're fast eaters, though we do try to slow down. I think it was schoolt aht made us eat so fast, especially me who would do my homework during lunch before the next class periods.

Yogurt is very nutritious if you pick them out right, I saw a segment with MIL one day about it. I don't remember all that was said, but the yogurt we buy was considered to be healthy, though not completely on the mark for what they said. They have different flavors, My husband and I enjoy cinnamon bun flavored yogurt, it is delicious. You do not like yogurt?

Yeah I remember high school that demand us to eat fast. But now I eat slower and enjoy my meals faster. By the way, it's good that you drink yoghurt. I heard they are very nutricious. I wish like it..

I don't. Maybe because I never eat it as a child and now as a teenager I don't like the taste of it. I prefer milk. My cousins love youghurt and always encourage me to try to enjoy it. maybe I'll listen to them next time realizing how good it is for our health :)

I eat my meal very slowly. My friends tease whether I have teeth or not because I eat slowly. I think this is my habit. If I eat very fast, I will feel uncomfortable after that. But I have heard that eating slowly is good for the health. So perhaps they just eat fast and therefore I seem to be odd around them. I love China

Hi youless Same with me! I think eat too fast not good for our health, since our stomach doesn't have teeth to chew the food, so better to eat slowly, make sure you chew the food until it's quiet soft My friend and my parents often ask me and even my parents say I look like an old woman with no teeth.. the fact is, I just love enjoy the food and eat slowly for my health.. Guess they will hardly understand about that, but let us stay eat slowly for our health, no matter what others say

Hi nooveggies I'm the kind of person who love to enjoy the food melt in my mouth, taste every spices in that food and eat slowly I hear eat slowly can help us to lose weight (actually I'm skinny, but I don't know, I just like to eat slowly). Break time in my college is quiet long, so I can eat slowly and enjoy my meal. But, I can't do it with my breakfast. I don't like wake up too early, so I must eat my breakfast hurriedly.. When I was in highschool, I ate my breakfast inside the car. It took around 1 hour to arrived in my highschool and that is enough for me to finish my breakfast Now in college, I drive myself and must finish my breakfast at home, it takes around 15 minutes because I don't have appetite to eat in the morning (but it's a habit in my family : always eat breakfast!) In holiday, I eat breakfast while browsing on the net and it takes me around 1 hour to finish. In dinner, it depends on my activity. If I have test tomorrow, I can finish it around half-1 hour, if I have nothing to do I usually watch TV with my family while eating dinner for about 2 hours

That's a very great eating habit. You seem to enjoy your food very much. During holidays, I too eat very slowly, trying to enjoy chewing those foods.

It is good for our health, eating slowly.. Even in busy situation, just grab some burgers or other food then eat it while I'm running or walk fastly, but still, chew it slowly

I'm a pretty quick eater. I basically only eat because it's required to or I'll die. If I'm in a restaurant, I'll try to eat more slowly because I don't want everyone looking at me and thinking I was raised in a barn. But even there, I usually finish first.

I don't much like to eat. It just takes up time in my day that could be used to work or activism. I'm a total workaholic.
• Indonesia

Well it must be admitted that many people were under the impression of quick eaters are like you said, "raised in a barn". Are you saying that you don't really takethe time to enjoy your food since you need it only for your body to survive? I think my food are delicious and I hate eating food with bad taste even though people say to me that we need certain food for our health

This does seem like a little neat thing to discuss. For me I think it depends on what is going on when I eat. If I am very hungry I tend to eat very fast for obvious reasons. But if I am relaxing and kicking back I will take almost an hour to eat a meal. And also it depends on how much I am eating at once. For example if I am eating like a 5 thing meal meaning 5 different things at once it will always take me longer to eat and I get full faster. And to be really honest I enjoy eating bigger meals because I am fuller longer. I hope answered all your questions thanks for starting this discussion happy mylotting as well.
• Indonesia

Yes I think that depends on how hungry we are too. I don't like to eat big meals because I like to eat different kinds of meal throughout the day, including snacks. I got full when the others are eating something else if Ieat a big portion of meal.. :)

My lunch time meal is sometimes a big smoothie which I drink on the run while I am working. Sometimes I have this for breakfast and drink it while getting kids ready for school and various other jobs. So when I have my large smoothie, it usually takes me over an hour to drink it as it is quite filling and I am busy doing other things, not sitting down. The only meal I usually sit down at the table with my family for is dinner. This usually takes around 20 minutes to eat as we talk as a family as well while we are eating!
• Indonesia
2 Nov 09
I see. If your dinner is in small portion 20 minutes is good. I heard that eating small amount at night is more healthy too.
• Indonesia

Wow you truly are a busy man. How nice of you to prepare the kids in the morning. Isn't dinner in 20 minutes a bit fast?

No, I do not think so. I try not to have too large a meal at night time as it does not digest as well as during the day time. I also try not to have anything heavy at night very often!

when i was a child, my father didnt allow us to speak or laugh more when eating. so i formed the habit to eat fast. not count how fast it is. but always i'm the fastest one to finish each meal when with others. in fact, sometimes i do want to chew carefully, and eat for longer time. but i cant. i have had the habit.

Your father must be a strict man. Or is it the custom in China? My parents are chinses who were born in Indonesia so I think they're not strict anymore.

i think not the custom here. maybe only cause my father is a little strict. but i still love him so much.

They tell you to lose weight you should eat slow. I try and try but I still eat fast. If I'm with friends I don't usually talk as much and eat more so I'm usually done first. I try different things like cutting pizza with a knife and fork but I still eat too fast. I usually eat by myself so breakfast and lunch takes about 10 minutes if that, dinner maybe half an hour.

To eat slower, I might have a tip for you. Try to chew more before swalowing, ensure that the food in your mouth is really really soft and smooth. It's good to eat slower like that because it eases the job of your digestive system. Give it a go. :)

Thanks for the tip! I'll try that. It makes sense, if nothing else it might help my digestive system.

I eat very fast - usually in about 5 to 10 minutes. My spouse eats slow - usually about 15 minutes per meal. That's how long it takes just to eat the food. If you add in socializing then of course the time increases. We generally have breakfast together and that takes about 1/2 hour. Same thing at supper (or dinner as some folks call it). Lunch - we don't generally eat lunch. My spouse is always telling me to slow down. I agree I should but all through college and work we only got 30 minute meal breaks - so by the time you got your food heated it up and started eating you had about 15 minutes to finish clean up and get back to work.

I think 15 minutes is too fast. I can't enjoy my meal very much if I have to finish a meal in about 5 to 10 minutes. In college, meals are usually served fast and no cleaning up needed after eating.

Unfortunately, I eat very fast. No matter what it is breakfast lunch dinner, I eat within 5 minutes USUALLY.. When Im out with some family at a restaurant, I eat somewhat slower, but yeah. Otherwise, I eat quite quickly. Explains my pugginess! =)

I finish what I eat fifteen minutes tops. I have no idea where or how I acquired this habit. I guess its because I have had a dysfunctional family and we never really got around to sit and eat dinner together.

Hello nooveggies, I am a slow eater. If I am in a hurry, I don't eat *laughs* I will wait until I have time to eat though it means that I can only eat once at night. I love to enjoy my meals and at the same time, whenever I am having a meal with my family, that's the time to chat too! As for breakfast, I only take a light one where I can have it on the go *smiles* I understand your situation as I was once a student too.

Wow your stomach must be strong. If I skip any meal, mine will go crazy! LOL! Who knows student life could be that hard and demanding..

I think the longest meal that I take into is during lunch time. I do not take any breakfast. Its usually 30 minutes but I do not eat plenty. Its just that I take my time in eating. My dinner is quite short since I also do not take a lot during evenings.

My breakfast takes about half an hour, my lunch less than an hour because it's just a small meal or a snack and my dinner takes more, like an hour or so. I enjoy eating my food quietly, no need to go fast, I like to feel the food in my mouth, enjoy side dishes, mix food, play with it, talk with anybody at the table...

Yes I'm totally with you! Food are made to be enjoyed right? They are delicious. It's funny you should mention 'play with it'. What do you mean?
