My husband and I don't have trick or treaters down our road, but we went to a friend's house who has trick or treater's every year. Our friend, who was passing out the candy, gave tips to the children on how to get more candy! lol!

When it was quite a new thing here in England, my father-in-law answered the door to some children who asked "Trick or treat?" He had no idea what was going on and, eventually said "A treat please". After a few minutes they gave up & left. When he went back & told my mother-in-law, she explained that HE was supposed to give THEM the treat. My mum's neighbour had the front of his house "egged" when he didnt answer the door... he wasn't even home at the time.

You don't ask for tricks here, the children have no idea what you are talking about. Most of them don't even know how the holiday originated or why they dress up in costumes. All they know is that they're going out house to house, holding out their bags and getting candy dropped into it. I make comments to visitors when I can but it's the rare child who appears receptive or who asks questions.

Oh that's great. I never have heard of anyone doing this other than taking them inside to see the haunted house. Maybe I'll try that next year. Thanks for the idea. =]
