Sunday Lunch - tradition or not?

Well today is sunday and even though I am not back in the UK at the moment I will be making a usual sunday roast dinner. When at home in the UK I would either have family over to my house or go to family members houses for sunday lunch. The lunch would consist of a roast meat (i.e roast beef, chicken etc) along with roast potatoes, mashed potatoes and lots of vegetables all smothered in a loveley rich gravy. Do you have sunday lunch with your family? Is it tradition in your country to get together with family on Sundays? In the UK its supposed this tradition is dying out but I really enjoy it and will continue to have the family gathering on sunday. How about you?

Sunday meals are different at my house than they are during the week. Sunday lunch and Sunday dinner seem to be combined as one meal. Often other family members will eat with us as well. It brings a sense of closeness to our family than we can have at least one day out of the week without being hectic.

I always try to cook a large meal on Sunday. During the week I work and it is hard to put together a full course meal when I get home. We usually have something fast like spaghetti, burgers, etc. I have a husband, two grandchildren that live with us and my elderly aunt.

Yes it can be difficult to make a big roast dinner in the week, I really enjoy the Sunday routine of cooking a lovely meal for my family. Thanks for sharing.

I was born in England and lived there until I was 11 years old, when we came to Australia. I am a fair-dinkum Aussie now (62 years later) but I am proud of my English heritage and there is still a lot of English in me. A Sunday roast is one tradition I like, but our Sundays are too busy to accommodate a roast lunch. We eat our main meal at night and so for a number of years now, I have cooked a Sunday roast for dinner at night. Sunday or Saturday family gatherings are popular here. Our family (5 married sons) are scattered over this vast land with the closest one a four drive away, so a family gathering is rather out of the question for us. Recently we were invited to lunch one Sunday by a 91 year old lady. We expected something very light; maybe a salad or a few sandwiches. She served a full roast pork dinner, followed by an apple crumble for desert; all beautifully presented at an immaculately set table. She is an amazing woman. She lives on her own, does her own cooking and most of the cleaning, but has a lady to do the heavier work. She keeps a beautiful garden which she cares for herself, but gets a man in to do the heavy digging. She says she always has a Sunday roast, even if she is on her own.

Wow thats great, I think its great to keep doing things as long as you can - once you stop it might be difficult to start up again! Glad you are keeping up the english tradition in Oz even after all this time!

As much as possible we gather together on Sundays. We cook barbecue along with our favorite dish, its usually vegetables with some coconut and squash cook by our mother. Though we may not be able to do it every time considering that there are times that I am traveling as part of my work.

Hello carmelbg this is checkmail and here too sunday meals are assumed as a tradtion where all family members and relatives come together for a feast lunch and dinner. Most of the time in sundays its Non-veg dishes like gravies, fries, roasts, grilled, spicy, etc.Except have veg when there is some holy day coming on sunday. In veg like simple dishes with lot of sweets and spicy foods.Yeah its becoming a concern as most of the family members are not having the time to join this sunday feasts.

hi carmelbg, i think your sunday lunch tradition is so good, it is a good chance for family members to get together to chat, care of others. but we do not have this kind of sunday luch tradition in china. but we also pay more attention on family gathering. we would get together on mid-autumn day and lunar new year. 90 families would follow this tradition.

Its always great to bring people together, even though you don't have the tradition each sunday at least there are occasions when you all come together.

The closest to Sunday lunch we have on Sunday is some kind of lunch during half time at football, but we don't have family over or anything like that. One or two friends come over every week to watch the game and I either make everyone lunch or we order out. When I was growing up my mom would always make a nice Sunday dinner. I was just thinking of that actually I would sometimes take a nap on Sundays as a teenager and I would wake up smelling the roast cooking in the oven. I would always be so hungery and the roast would taste so amazing.

I have to admit, that sounds very nice! I haven't had a Sunday roast in a very long time and I really do miss it. I think this is the norm for families that are together. When you have no family though and you live on your own then I really don't see the point in this. That's not to say I don't cook because I really do make the effort. However, I have fallen into this routine now whereby I do what is required in terms of preparing food and nothing more. Reading a discussion like yours though does tend to get the taste buds dancing around in my mouth! Andrew

I don't have family so there aren't gatherings either. And my lunch is never big but just a salad or a snack. But for me the 'big heartwarming meal' Sunday dinner, and there I go with a wonderful roasted chicken. I feel at home.
