I just have to write this here, I am just so devastated at the moment
Last year I was bought a Laptop for my Birthday, I was over the moon as it was getting hard for me to sit at the PC specially after my Operation, so my wonderful De bought me a Laptop, I love this Laptop, I look after it, but then I made a big Mistake a few Days back, I am normally so careful what I put on here or download, but this Program said it gives more Memory by clearing deleted files, so of I go and download it, then I go to switch it on and .......yikes ...... Operation System not found...... don't be silly it is there, it was there not so long ago, ok, try again .......double Yikes....... same message, I tried everything, nothing, I then got so frustrated I had to put my faithful Laptop away from me, as the Window looked good at the time for it to go flying. Ok, now what? Well I rang R and D, of course D confirmed what I had suspected, this Program had certainly given me a lot of Memory, it WIPED everything, when I spoke to my Friend C later who is with the same Site as me, she told me that is what it is for, oh just great
Tamara and her Husband where sending me a Back up CD which I have now received
But De told me to find out how much it would cost at the shop just down the road to have Vista put back on, well it was quite Cheap, so he paid for having it sorted, yeahhhhhhhhhh I have it back, but, I have to find everything, Firefox is playing up, I have to set everything again to how it was and can not remember all of it of my Head right now
I have uninstalled and installed Firefox again but still having the Problems and right now I want to scream, as I want my poor laptop back before I crashed it, but I think the Laptop is paying me back, apparently this is the newest Version of Vista so it is a bit different, A BIT the last one I figured fine, done a lot on this Vista to but still not how it was
So in Memory of my faithful Laptop before the Crash, please, please, stop sulking and let me have you back how you where
Ok I am ripping my Hair out here so I had to put a bit of Humour here hehehehe

Hi Gabs, I'm sorry for your situation. Normally when I have something like close to crashing of the PC, I take the recovery CD and reboot the system back and everything. And if things get stuck, I just go to the restore button and backdate back to the date when the PC wasn't crashed. How many browsers do you have besides Firefox? Try to have only 1 search engine installed for the moment. I am actually not a big fan of Vista, it's quite complicated for me to understand. I would panic too if I see the error Operation System not found, yikes!

Sometimes MyLot is the perfect place to rant. We can listen, and maybe someone can help you out. I certainly cannot, but I know there are users wiser than me who just might have some advice. I can say a little prayer perhaps for your laptop, though.

Hi Gaby. I thought your laptop was already back and working fine, but I think I know what you mean. Things are never restored exactly the way they were and it takes quite some work to get back to the familiar. If files were deleted and you had no backup, that would be a huge problem. (That reminds me: I must do a backup!)
I hope you soon have everything back to normal.

Just think a few years ago none of us even had them......now we are so dependent on them that we can hardly make it through a day if they are not preforming correctly! LOL.....I hate it when mine goes down....what an inconvience! LOL.....glad you have it semi back! Tell it to shape up....what is done is done and in the past so time to move on!

Hi Gabs, sorry to hear about your Laptop, I've got vista on my PC, and never had any problems with Firefox, although I use Opera as my main browser with Firefox as Backup. I also have a laptop with XP, and use Opera 7 Firefox there as well. If you are still having trouble with Firefox, then why not try Opera?
You should perhaps try and do a complete backup onto an external hard disk (they've come down in price quite a lot recently and a reasonable size one can be bought for around £35-£40, even a 1 Tb is under £70). Still expensive I know, but compared to having to get your laptop re-configured can be cheaper in the long run.
Are you sure Gissi hasn't been playing with it and changing the configuration behind your back.

Oh my, that's really tragic. Don't worry, you will have it all right back soon. You must be careful while downloading stuff Gabs. Some of it contains virus and spyware. Most of it has loads of junkware. :)
Cheers and happy Mylotting

Two things I'd suggest you do when you get started again, one is firefox has a plugin called xmarks, this saves all your bookmarks on a server that you can access from any where and comes in real handy if your away from your computer and using someone else s! For things like this you could access this and just reload it, it's a great program but you have to keep updating it as you go along, but this a small price to pay! The next is Mozy.com lets you back up your system for free at a server on their site, this is a great free program for helping people just like you! For you never know when this will happen again, and it will eventually it happens to the best of us! tdemex

Vista program is more complex than XP program. Why not use XP which is more simple and easy to use. You can use system restore when you are in trouble browsing the internet by restoring your system in an earlier time before it crashed. I did it so many times in my laptop and it works. Mind you I have not pulled my hair for not recovering my lost data. he-he-he

So your saying you downloaded some crap, then deleted important stuff you need?
Also be careful downloading any kind of free adware or virus cleaners because they will also delete important files.
Last time this happened to me I just went and bought a new laptop.
I bought a new one because was cheaper than having it repaired again.

Breathe, slowly breathe. It is okay. The laptop will eventually be your friend again. My laptop is in the shop also. I wore out the display screen something or other. The techie dude is finding a new power supply doo-hicky for it. My computer is fine but I can't see anything. So I have to be patient while he finds parts to fix it. I totally understand that feeling of wanting to pull your hair out and scream. I really know that feeling of wanting to throw the laptop through a window. But like you, I did not do any of that.

how dreadful, i live in fear of losing everything on my laptop. the frustrating thing was , that you thought you were clearing deleted files instead of wiping everything off. lotsa sympathy from me. i am getting a lot of probs with my laptop and it does feel as though there is a little gremlin inside, saying lets really mess her up,lets get some updates for her, right in the middle of her checking her e mails. grr.

hi gabs oh I do wish we lived close to you so I could have sent my computer programmer son over to help you out.once when I had a problem similar to yours he just went into something that set everything back to where it was before your computer crashed.that way you would not lose anything. but I sure would not know how to solve your problem either, in fact it sounds like you have more computer expertise than I do. I have always been dubious of programs that say they will give you more memory, as it would only come with deleting something, and maybe something you would not want deleted. We are seriously contemplating upgrading my 2000 windows, that is so old, to something newer, maybe vista. but my son says and I agree, we have to wait until he gets a bit more money. I suggested a used program but he said, and I realized he was right ,that a used program will not let you record it so if you had any problems you could not call the company but if you buy new then you will register it and then should something go wrong you could get help. anyway I do hope you get everything all back to normal. and oh please do not rip out your hair, sounds so painful

My laptop just went through a complete reinstall, too.
Somehow, I had contracted a trojan virus. My anti-virus program caught it and I thought I had deleted it. But, the very next time I went to turn it on, I got a message saying that some worm was trying to send my credit card information somewhere and my anti-virus was listing what looked like dozens of worms, trojans, etc. that were on my laptop, so I immediately shut it down.
My husband did a complete reinstall so now I'm trying to get things back to the way they were, just as you are. Of course, with the reinstall, we used the recovery CDs that came with the computer, so I have the same operating system as before. I just don't have all the cool stuff I added. Sigh!
I know exactly how frustrated you must be! I miss my Weatherbug and my Solitaire Plus. I miss the links I had put on my desktop to certain games "how-to's" of growing certain things. It's a slow process, but I'm confident that both you and I will get things back to normal eventually. Hang in there!

You don't have to put Vista back on it. It is your computer and you can use any operating system that you want to. It really gripes me that the manufacturers force us to take the latest version of windows installed on a new computer when we buy one.
I personally use windows xp on one computer and Linux on my other one. I have access to another computer in the house that has Vista on it and it's ok just not my favorite.
I have also been where you are having to re-install all my personal programs and preferences again. It is always a good idea to keep some kind of cd backup for your most important programs or information. You can even keep a copy of your hard drive exactly as it is when you get it where you want it so you can restore it that way. I don't like the restore features on most installed software. I like to use my own way to keep records of my hard drive. It makes it easier when you have to re-install your operating system.

sorry for your experience. i don't have so much trouble with mine, but i don't like it.
I'm not very satisfied with the three things until now. One is the speaker system with bad CD performance. The second one is that Dell's logo always stays on the top left corner of the screen when I'm on internet. The last one is the key board is too sensitive. Sometimes without any notice my typing gets wrong. I feel difficult to write long article on my laptop.
