Do you put people in grooves?

We all have this tendency to categorise people as being good, bad, kind, generous et al based on little or no experience. Time changes them but we have no time to see this change in them. To give you an example I just want to tell you about a brand of soap which I detested and never used because of its strong smell. Years went by and then one day my doctor told me that there is a brand of soap which has disinfectants that no soap has and I should get it for the family and it was that soap which I detested and tried it just the other day and I noticed it has a different smell and quite pleasing too. Why do we not keep a vigil on people and change our attitude towards them?

I think I got confused by your discussion between people and soaps. Anyway, I think you are trying to describe first impressions. Oftentimes, our first impressions on people don't change. If at first chance of seeing someone, and our impression about him or her is that of being not too bright, they tend to be in that classification as far as we are concerned. It would take a great deal before we can change this impression. I guess, that's why people always say...'make a good first impression'.

The soap was just an example. It happened just recently and I thought how unfair we would be if we gave the same treatment to people who also make strides but we fail to see them.

The first impression seems quite unforgettable rather than the consequent cognition. As is known to all, falling in love with sb at the first sight not the second.
