does network marketing really make you eran that much?

the current trend of earning money is through network marketing. Unfortunately, we have a limited idea on what is the difference between network marketing and the much talked about pyramiding scam. Most of us think it is one and the same, wherein those who start the network are on top get the larger income whilst those in the bottom rung are literally feeding the ones on top. I just hope someone else could explain these schemes further...
