Why do women feel it necessary to put make up on when going out?

My wife and I recently celebrated our 6th year wedding anniversary and before we left she spent almost an hour getting ready to go out. I personally think that she looks beautiful without having to do anything special. Why does she have to go through the process of make up and other things like that. Is this the same for all women? I also have two teenage step daughters who do the same thing. My wife even has to make sure she "looks good" even if she is running to the gas station or to pick up a kid from a friends house. Is this how everyone women does it?

It's a self-confidence thing obviously. But for me? I'm addicted to wearing makeup - and I usually need to fix myself up before going to work or out with friends, but I'm almost totally content with going to the gas station or the grocery store with no makeup on. I'm not one of those people who HAVE to be wearing makeup 24/7. I think that's a little ridiculous if you ask me. Why dress up to get gas? Or to pick up a few things from the store? Putting makeup on is definitely part of my everyday routine, but if I don't have makeup on, I'm not going to hide away from the world until I do. LOL. I have friends, though, quite a few - who will literally NOT leave their house until they are all done up, perfectly - hair, makeup, clothes - the whole thing. I guess I'm different in that sense because I feel totally comfortable going out wearing sweats and no makeup. But that's just me. I don't really care what others think of my appearance, especially when I'm running errands!
