I've only really had to deal with this type of situation a few times. The first was when my son was like 2-weeks-old, and we had to be evacuated from our apartment because the greater part of the town I was living in was flooding. Some of you might have heard about it. This was a big flood that happened in August of '07 in Ohio.
Of course, there was another flood in our area, but it wasn't as bad, and we weren't living in that town anymore. I just happen to work in that town. Go figure.
The most recent time was when we received a lot of rain, although I can't remember if there were any areas that flooded. However, I know there was about ankle deep water in our basement. That wouldn't have happened though if our sump pump would have been working. Go Figure.

It's a helpless feeling when you know it's going to happen, and there's nothng you can do other than moving all your belongings to high ground. then you wait until he water recedes. My old house has high water table problem, any time the sump goes out, it would leak into the basement, so we never did finish the basement because you never can predict when it's going to happen again.

I wouldn't mind finishing our basement, but the main problem is that it's not deep enough...and it gets its occasional water. I know if we ever build our own home, I want a big enough basement to make it a finished one.

really ? I guess there are other areas where flooding is affecting lives too.
It's no secret that PH had a bad flood recently because of the typhoons passing thru our major city. I personally was not affected but I was stuck in the office for more than 30 hours.
My friends had their houses totally submerged. They had their homes in places that was "never" flooded bad before

The first time was just recent, It was the first time water entered our home, but it was not more than a centimeter high hehe, It was due to the typhoon Ondoy that really made a lot of damage to our country. Our family is so glad that we were not affected as much as others were.

I experienced flooding once when i was in my uni . The whole campus was flooding. The shuttle buses stopped running. Instead, we used boats coz the main road was flooding as well. The electricity was cut off and there was no food supplied. It was really a bad experience.

I live about 30 minutes drive from the city. The great thing is that there is no problem in so far as flood is concerned. I have never experience any flooding in our place ever since I lived here 7 years ago. Our place is also very near the sea, so most often when there is heavy rain, the water just flows out to the sea. Though in the city, I have experience some flooding during heavy rains.

We haven't had any huge floods here where I live although we have had a few smaller ones. There was one in my town back in the eighties that I think did some damage but I was young so I don't remember too much about it but I do remember stepping out my back door and it being up to my knees but as a kid it was fun and my friends and I ran through the high waters not knowing the possible consequences of a flood. Then just a few years ago there was another small flood in the main of town...we lived in a hill at the time and didn't even realize the there was any flooding going on until we got down town and ran smack dab into it. we have been fortunate enough to not be struck by bad flooding.

Yes out here in PA we had some big flooding in both '05 and '06. We had to evacuate in '06. Our home had over 6 ft. of water in the basement that was encroaching on the lower floor. It was a total mess we had no electric or running water for weeks (electric in 5 days water was almost three weeks). Not an easy feat with three kids ranging from 7-1. All I have to say is thank you to the men and women of the Red Cross who helped us with food, clothing, cleaning up, pumping out and everything in between. FEMA was worthless. They didn't even help the old lady down the street with her home (one side of it washed away) because she had too many assets! She was a 80+ year old widow on a pension and Social security, so what if she owned both the house and car debt free, she was in the house 58 years and the car was a '79. AHHHH.
Sorry about that. Yes I remember your flooding as my husband and his crew went out there to help move vehicles (he is a tow truck driver and foreman of a Hazardous waste clean up company) and clean up toxic spills. He was there for quite a while helping with the clean up. Our basement too now leaks with every rain fall.

Yah, I experienced it last week. That was the first time I saw a flood here in our place. Our place is high though we are near the lake. There was a typhoon that day and the water from the lake overflowed.

Our house is built in a high ground and flood never entered it. As our street is lower than any of the house, its where most of the flood waters go. But it will only took a very heavy long rain to flood them as our drainage system is very well maintained mostly because of the home owners association and most of the families living in our neighborhood are keeping each and everyone's drainage clean every now and then. If there would be a flood, its definitely subsides in an hour or so. I guess we are the ones who are fortunate enough to experienced a nearly unflooded space here in the earth.

Hehehe..We,the people in Jakarta Indonesia all are very conscious towards rainy seasons. We have big floods almost every 5 years, and flooding happens in a few areas every year. When the big flood in 2002, I was living in a a upper class condo with my family so I just hear about people experiencing the flood with no disturbances to ourselves other than we had to stay in and the supermarkets are rushed by all the people to stock up on food supplies. In 2007, I was staying in an apt in the CBD area but my kids were staying in a house in the West Jakarta area. The roads in front of my house and access to the residential area were flooded.During floods, the electricity and clean water supply were cut off.I was worried for my kids, and when it stopped raining for an hour,I had my brother and a few staff hire a big truck and a dingy to rescue my kids and a maid out of the house, evacuate them to the apartment.it was a stressful situation for me and my family as we were worried for my 3 kids at home only with 2 maids. In 2008,I was prepared to move house when jakarta begins flooding again.access to the new house was also flooded but only below knee level when it stopped raining for a few hours in the morning.I decided to take a risk, going through a roundabout way from the highway. And the results is no traffic jams and we managed to pass through and make the journey in 30 mins which is considered a feat in normal jakarta traffic with its famous traffic jams.

We do get flooding here from time to time. THe community if we hve a large melting of snow or tons of rain. But typically I get it in my basement between the rain, snow melting, having septic, and no sump pump... wich sux cause we can't really use our basement. That's the one thing besides the size of our house I really hate about it.
