Overcoming a fear is easier said then done. I am 33 years old. Believe me I have tried to not be fearful..

I have always hated going to the dentist. I usually don't go until I absolutely have to (of course that means I am in pain)! I know I should go more often, but I just can't make myself do it. When I was a child we went to a dentist who would slap your hand if you so much as moved a finger. I suppose thats where my fear of dentists began. I have a good dentist and usually after I have gone I realize it wasn't as bad as I thought, but yet I'm always back to not going until I have to. Best wishes to all!

That would defintely cause fear in a child by getting your hand slapped if you moved. That is a horrible Dentist. No wonder why you have fear of them

I do not like going to the dentist either, I have actually had panic attacks at the dentist before. Luckily I have a very nice understanding dentist. I go twice a year because I would rather keep my teeth clean and in good condition so that I don't have to withstand anything more than a cleaning. I take really good care of my teeth because I don't want to get cavities because I can't stand having them filled. Because of the panic attacks I called my regular doctor and he perscribed me some pills. I just take one about a half hour before my dentist appointment and I am nice and relaxed during the appointment. That is the only time I take them, but they really work, so if you have anxiety about going to the dentist call your regular doctor and tell him or her you have anxiety at the dentist and hopefully they can prescribe them to you too. They make you a little bit tired, but I am completely relaxed at the dentist now when I go.

You are right. I feel most of people are weary of visiting their dental doctor. In my country, doctors have become very commercial now. If u have a cavity, they do not even bother to fill it up, but will immediately suggest to go in for root canal and my problem is that due to my jaw structure root canal is never successful in my case. But conveying this to the dental doctor is always a problem. So last month, I again had root canal in my fifth molar tooth and since then I am experiencing pain in that particular tooth, but am reluctant to visit the doctor again.

why should be afraid of dentist??? in my opinion, the more fear is the pain. If my teeth an painful hole, then i will immediatelly go to dentist to patch up my teeth. i believe in the treatment process will not feel pain. Because we are first in anesthesia. Maybe you fear only equipment used and the noise generated by equipment. Every six months i always check my teeth atthe dentist. Routine examination is expected to be maintained dental health. like the saying goes : Prervention is Better than treatment. Have a nice day.
