I am a firm supporter of the death penalty. My biggest issue with it is that a criminal gets 20 years on death row before the penalty is carried out. I believe premeditated murder is a heinous crime and we should not be keeping people alive in prison for 20 plus years when they have no possibility of parole. I guess I am an eye for an eye kind of person. So mylotters what is your opinion? I thought I would narrow the penalty to be specific for 1st degree murder for our discussion to make it easier to compare apples to apples.

I don't think that they should be kept alive for 20 years, if we know and have proved beyond the shadow of all doubt that they willfully committed 1st degree murder.
But we can't and don't know for certain all the time, thus the 20 years gives us time to find out if the court was to be proved wrong.
Watch Suspect (starring Cher, I know I know) where the main character is being framed, yet is finally found innocent. It might help you see my point.

I think their punishment should be given to the next of kin to the person who was murdered. Such as if I was murdered my parents should be able to choose the punishment of the person convicted.I think this is the only fair way to give peace to the family.
To a family of a murdered child , or a murdered spouse , parents whatever - locking someone up for 20 years , with the constant threat of parole is not fair.Their loved one was taken from them without consultation , or thought of the pain it would cause. Therefore , they should get a say in the punishment that will be carried out.
