I was on aol today and saw this article about George Jones. He's speaking out against Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, two of the newest big country stars that he feels isn't country at all. Read the article to find out more but here's a snippet
"they've stolen our identity." And, he maintains, they need to give it back and move on to another genre."

So what do you think?

If he does not like their music then don't like their music and that is it. I believe Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift are both country artists who mix Country with Pop. I can't believe he would not realise that. He may not like them but to say they do not perform music in the genre of Country is stupid and just plain incorrect.

I believe he has a right to say what he has said as he has been in the business for a long time, though I do think that going so far as to expect or hope them to be re categorized is wrong. I belive Willie Nelson has done a few performances with some of the newer country artists. I also believe that country has been changing for awhile, and it's not just these two ladies who's made such a drastic change.

To say that she is not country is wrong as there are many different kinds of Country and Taylor Swift does do Country as well as Pop.

I partly disagree with George. Carrie has done and is doing a lot of traditional Country material. I've heard nothing by her that sounded any more Pop-like than what Tammy Wynette was doing in the 70s. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, is not Country at all, and genuine Country stations do not play her music.

I don't think that they are the country that George Jones is used to but they are the country of these times. I think that there are a lot of country singers that are nothing like the country that George Jones, Hank Williams, and Merle Haggard are. Smae with other genres.

I wonder if it would suffice for George Jones if these newer artists were categorized as "new age country" and the same could be said for newer generations of other genre's as well.

I think he should be happy these singers are keeping people interested in country music. I'll never forget hearing him say on the radio years ago that country singers needed to get back to what they used to sing about in his day. He said they needed to get back to songs about drinking and cheating. Yes, let's get back to that. We still do have those songs in fact. I think George Jones is starting to feel irrelevant. Which is sad. He Stopped Loving Her Today still brings tears to my eyes. He needn't be worried about keeping country music how it was - we'll never lose that. New country singers still have respect for the "old" ways. And I'm finding more and more old fashioned country songs from these singers. In words yes, but most importantly in the old style of music. Those songs though just don't get much air play.
I can't read the article yet, but I plan to as soon as I can get it to copy and paste.

To be honest I am a bit confused as to what to think of what George Jones has said... If you read my comments to others you'd see my confusion. Though I have to agree, I think country music is the one genre that while it expands and grows, it also doesn't forget the old style, and many implement that in their own style... making it more interesting.

George Jones has been in the country music business for quite some time and isn't a fan of the newer country singers. It's not a people as whole who believe that singers such as Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood are bad singers or not for the country genre, it's just a select few...
I suppose it all goes down to things change and not everyone likes it, but that can be said about anything really... and we all have things we don't like changed.
