Everyone want to improve the relationship with their boss because it is very useful to lower the workplace stress. What's more, for staff, they can increase theirr workplace happiness and have more chances to improve themselves if they have a strong relationship with their boss.
However, as a responsible staff, people tend to make a complaint to their bosses. But unfortunately, our bosses are not our mother. Most bosses are similar because they often refuse the different ideas with them. You see, they will never listen at all, and always think they are right Sometimes, they may become kind because they pretend to listen.
Why is that bosses hardly listen to their staff? It is obvious that they are not right all the time, but why they always refuse to listen?

I no longer work so I am speaking from my past experiences. It is true I think that people feel happier and do better jobs if they have a positive and happy relationship with their bosses. No bosses are not your mother. You do owe them respect though as you would your mother. The boss is right. If you don't get along or do not have a good repore with your boss and there for feel uncomfortable you should fine other work. Some bosses are power hungry and one-minded and you just need to go elsewhere. If you work for a good company and this a true and realistic greivance that you have you need to go above him, or go the line or command. Some companies have a toll free number you can call to discuss such things and they are mediators and won't let it be known that you called. It just depended on what type of company you work for.

And, I agree. In a lot of cases. I really don't know anymore because, as I said I am not out there in workland anymore, but I can understand that it is an ongoing process. With some it will never happen. With others it is a work in process.

In my opinion, it is glamour for most people to work for a good company. Of course, people will feel lucky if they can meet a boss who are kind, friendly and competnet. However, it is really a difficult task to work for a company full of opportunities and meet a good boss at the same time.
So, most people have to try their best to build a good relationship with their bosses.

In my country, it is not all the same.
Though in some occassions, there are bosses who are arrogant and do not want to listen. However, there are those who are really competent and know what they are doing when it comes to their relationship with their subordinates.
In cases where a boss is like a king to rule, subordinates will stage a petition.

Compared with the situation in my country, I have to say that you are so lucky. Here, in my country, most bosses refuse to listen for they are always arrogant. What's worse, they are not competent but they just think they are so competent that all of his subordinates should follow his ideas and thoughts.

They refuse to listen because of pride. They think that because they are the boss, their ideas have to be right all the time. They think that because they are the boss, staffs don't have the capacity to think as they do.
Some bosses even refuse to listen to staff, but when his ideas turn sour, he will get back at the staff and accuse them of not being able to contribute much to company. What can we do? None. They are the boss.
Our time will come when we will be the bosses. If that time comes, then we already know how we should treat our staff. The way we wanted to be treated back when were "THE" staff.

Yes, I can't agree with you anymore. These so called bosses always pretend to listen. But in fact, they have never pay any attention to our ideas or opinions.
They are not the right one all the time and I believe that our opinions are helpful to the company and the position of these bosses!

Well, I have been under someone who always thinks he is right and is always on top. I do agree that he is very good and knowledgeable but the thing is he has this attitude that is all knowing and usually it seem that he thinks he is always right. But I know that he does have a good heart. Well of course, he is the boss and obviously he is the one being followed and I respect that. Now, I work in a different setting and have a business of my own. Basically, I am the boss of my business and at the same time an employee on the other side. My new boss is very good and I have no complains.

I have only had a few bosses inmy life that refused to listen at all. I am grateful that the majority of the bosses I have had were willing to listen. I had one boss that ended up being a pretty good friend. This particular boss and I could have heated discussions in the office and then sit down and have a break together. We were both willing to admit when we were in the wrong and worked out our differences quite well. I think that she and I both counted on each other a lot and that helped build a lasting friendship between us.
I remember another boss, one that just would not listen no matter what. This particlar person was the type who showed favortism to certain people and treated others horribly. Needless to say, not many people stayed at that place of business for long while this one was in charge.
I think that some people in a boss position feel that they have to prove their authority and forget how it is to be the one lower on the totem poll. Those power hungry bosses are the ones that annoy me more than any.

One reason is because they have pride. They don't want good ideas coming from their staff. The annoying part here is that your boss won't accept your ideas but eventually he/she will do it and tell the management or others that the ideas came from him/her.

Hi, there, sometimes, I got the same situation, but I have no idea if my boss pretent to listen,I just present my suggestion based on fact. if i can not convince to adopt my suggestion, that is not my lose, just my boss. I think a good boss should allow different ideas and select the best one. if one day I were a boss, I would do it as i said.

As a leader your boss should know how to listen to your ideas. but sometimes, your boss doesn't agree your your idea and tend to ignore yours. thats fine with me actually, the good thing is that I've been able to express my idea no matter how ridiculous it is or my boss doesn't want it. Better than never discussing it with him or her.

I think it's because whenever a staff gives them another idea, they feel threatened, and if they agree totally, that means having to admit that they are not so smart after all (with other words..that staff could mighty well take his/her position in the future).
My boss would always first yell or ignore me when I gave other ideas or even new ideas. But when I'm right, she always does it after a while ( and not giving any credits to me, of course). That's why I promised myself, if I ever become "The Mighty One" I will behave differently.

Yes, You have told the upset point that every worker will encounter. but I think since we can't change the mind of boss, we can change our mood.
I think the boss refuse to others opinion not only because he is a boss, but also maybe he is a stubborn. You will find hard to change one's mind if he/she is a subborn.I always feel upset to refuse by my boss before, but now I have a good state of mind to deal with it. Since I have been responsible to give you an suggestion, that's enough for my job.
Although, and sure We can't make every people like us and think in the same way with us, but we have successful to attract many people have the same thought with us to discuss in the forum

Yes, you are so right getbrowser! My thoughts on this are that they do not want anyone looking better than themselves and I really think they are afraid of losing their jobs. If you come up with too many great idea's that they didn't think of, it's not looking good for them. But, if the idea is really good, they'll find a way to bring it into the system and make it look like THEY thought of it. It's like that everywhere. I wouldn't be like that at all, I'd be glad to get some good new suggestions to make a happier work place for everyone. I say give credit where credit is due, right?
The last place I worked for was owned by two men who had no idea how to run the store. I kept suggesting idea's constantly on how to bring in more customers, keep everything stocked, re-arrange items to make them look new. Well, no one ever listened to me (and I have over 15 years in the retail industry), and as of 2 months ago, they closed. Too stubborn to even try my suggestions out and they went downhill completely and now are gone. Only lasted 2 years.
I'm not saying I could have kept the store open but they certainly could have tried my idea's to see how it went. No, bosses DO NOT listen, too stubborn and feel undermined.

Some bosses are so into their own sense of 'authority' that they won't listen because they feel that it diminishes their own position. Sometimes it's also how the subject is approached too. I've worked with people who never talked to the boss unless it was to criticize and offer suggestions. Those employees usually ended up being treated like nags...which they were, even if they had good ideas.
Bosses need to see themselves in command, but that doesn't stop them from also seeing employees as people like themselves too. A lot depends on how they are treated. If an employee is consistently respectful and friendly, those employess are more apt to be listened to. Women, I think, are better at this. It's easier for us to tell a boss, "Gee, you look tired today. Is there anything extra I can do to help?" Or, "Like your new shirt, that color looks great on you" and "Hope you have a nice weekend (or holiday). Do you have any plans?"
We all want to be liked, we all like compliments. Bosses have a boss above them, and also need to be profitable. Valued employees are more likely to be listened to because they are seen as people, not just minions. A tactful approach helps sometimes too. Present a thought in a quick 'I wonder if' format, then let it drop. The boss will think about it and perhaps act, treating the idea like his own. Or, perhaps he'd ask to talk more in depth with you about it. Still would get the job done, right?

You are so right, there are many bosses who won't give the time of day to their employees. I have worked for such a company. They looked down on us, as if we knew nothing. In my previous years, I actually managed a dept with 8 girls under me, yet later on when I went to work for another company, I chose not to be a manager, as it is a stressful position. However, you would think that I had some experience in what I was talking about, yet, they ignored whatever suggestion I had. And he was rude on top of it.
I left the company after 5 years, because I didn't need the abuse.

yes it happens bosses dont listen.
this is my own experience.
i have tried to tell many times for some wrong decisions he is going to take but he refuse to listen and in response he tells why he is going to do this and what is the advantage.
so i dont care now alot. and know about his deaf ears.

My boss refuses to listen to me all the time. I think it has to do with the whole "I am at a higher level than you" thing. And you can tell whenever he does not because he will come up with a suggestion or an idea way after I would have suggested it. It can be a rather frusterating thing having this kind of a boss. Makes you think about how appreciated you actually are by them. But the responsiveness of the boss can be something which you can improve. It requires being tough and just looking in their eyes and with an insistive yet professional tone make your point. At that times by the looks in their eyes you then have their full and undivided attention.
