Ellipsis (...)

... - It is a mark or series of marks that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word or a phrase from the original text. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought, or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence.

I love those ellipses but sometimes I hate it. Those 3 characters can summarize everything that a person feels and thinks, but does it really? It can be easily understood, but it holds different meanings. Does it mean something? anything? everything? or perhaps, nothing? Is it the full extent of what you wish to say, or were you just speechless? Perhaps, its the epitome of what you really feel, then again maybe you felt nothing. What does it mean for you? How do you use it? So guys feel free to fill in the blanks, in this case, the ellipses. Thanks for sharing.

It can mean entirely anything until the one who uses them decides to grant it meaning. The one getting them would have a number of ideas to what they may mean, and to how much they would ponder on its meaning could also amplify more speculations. These multitudes of guesses would just be silenced when explanation is provided. Then again, there are those who don't get satisfied with such reasonings to which these ellipsis where used. They would consider the conditions wherein these ommissions where used like, what was being talked about, asked or anything.

Yep, the number of possible meanings is too huge to be able to guess accurately, even when considering the conditions. Getting an elaboration of those dots does stop further speculation but sometimes an explanation is not offered, and it's also not asked by the receiver of such reply. Don't know how, but does work for some people. Would you mind stating a situation where in you would use those characters, and what would the meaning of it be in that situation..?

Hmmm, your welcome.. I seem to be too lax about my typing.. some words haven't been corrected and they too look awkward when I read them again. Hmmmm, should be careful next time..

Uhm.. er.. yeah, that was a good example of a situation. So good in fact that I had the dots run across my head while reading that. Then the word: "awkward" popped. Id probably get away from there as fast as I can. Still experience culture shock whenever I read/hear about true stories like that. Thanks for that example, and for the response.

I love Ellipsis (...) so much. I think I have a habit to put the 3 dots...in discussions, in my Facebook wall posts, in Twitter posts and many more, LOL. When my blog was open last time, I used to blog and keep on inserting Ellipsis (...) too. I think it's a habit of mine, LOL. It means like thinking, a pause or something for me..

I have noticed.LOL I do understand that the dots could be just a pause, but when they're used at the very end of the statement, it creates the impression that the person has something more to say. Well, thanks for sharing what those three dots mean when you use them. Thanks for the response as well.

Haha, you may be right about that.. Me and my never-ending thoughts.. that's why maybe I put those behind.. like the trail of words that are never there, but supposed to be or something, LOL... see, a trail of thoughts. I can never end..

you right there bj.we not know what they really mean with those three periods.sometimes it is frustrating when you want know what he means but he just say the dots.then yes he say something but he not say anything really at all.it is very hard to give meaning to that characters because people use it different ways in different place and different people.if i get very frustrated i ask him or her what did he she mean with the dots.i make sure that i not misunderstand things.

Hehe, yeah, I know how you get frustrated. The poor guy was flabbergasted when you asked him that straightforwardly. We just can never be too careful with those meanings. We just might be assuming when we shouldn't be in the first place, right?

To me it also mean the respondents have no words to say, it may be use to fill in some empty spaces to makes the sentences appear long, it may also have other meaning then it is up to the receiver to interpret. It may also mean i am thinking of the next sentences, or i;ll be waiting for your reply and some hidden codes. i do use it when I have to start another sentences or like to add additional statement and so on.. Sometimes it saves me from talking in lengthy post without understanding of the things which i have to interpret meanings in subtle ways. then, have to includes ellipsis as something mean like i noted your opinion or have to start writing in another paragraph and so on as simple as they are..

So aside from the things that you have clearly mentioned, you also implied that ellipsis could be the impression of a continuation, maybe like a "to be continued"..? Well, as already established there are just too many possible interpretations of these 3 characters. Sometimes the way of interpretation by the sender is very different from the way of the receiver, which would result to the meaning being lost in translation. Thank you for sharing your valuable output. This gives me more ideas as to the dynamic use of those three dots.
