Is car insurance in the US really expensive for drivers under 21?

Here, in the UK, if you're 17 or 18 and newly qualified, insurance is around £1500 on the cheapest to insure cars (generally the ones with the smallest engines, and therefore smallest cars) and that might only cover 3rd party, fire & theft. Quite often 1 year's insurance can be more than the value of your car. So this means new drivers have to drive small cars eg. Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa. As it would be ridiculously expensive for anything bigger. A Ford Focus is probably the biggest car you could insure. However, on American TV shows, people under 20 quite often have much bigger cars, sometimes even pick up trucks for example. So i was wondering is insurance on bigger cars for young drivers more affordable over there? Anyone know?

Here in India if you are 17 or 18 even you have no chance of getting motor bike. For that you have to argue with your parents for a ling time. Then at around at the age of 21 or 23 he will get the bike. After settling in life, after marriage around at the age of 27 or 28 he will think about the car.

It is very expensive for me. My daughter is 17 and just got a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and her rate is about 270 per month. It does not cover collision at all. Rates start to go down after they have their license for a year. Then each year after that til they are 21 - or so I have been told.

i think insurance may cost a fortune where ever you live in the world. i was under my parent insurance until i got my own car, even now i still am on theirs cause i drive their utes for things. factor in a v8 as well, not just the small cars. then you have a problem getting insurance.
