I once Owned a Race Horse

Yes I did. A real live race horse. I even had chosen my racing colours.
Someone gave me a race horse. A White elephant really. I did not know how to say no thank you back then. Anyway the horse was in colt and when she had the colt she died and I was asked to collect the colt.
I took one look at this pitiful, puny, spindly legged animal and knew that it would not live. I said that I was keeping away from it because it was going to die.It was dehydrated, sunken eyes and skin and bone. It took all of his energy to take a breath. Then it would pause for what seemed aeons before taking in another gasp of air. I suggested giving it eggs and brandy beaten into milk - at least it would die happy. But it did not die it grew. I still kept away from it and this would prove to have dire consequences as it bonded with everyone in the family except me.
So it grew and one day I looked at it and it was a very large sozzled horse because now they were giving it rum and eggs. But when I tried to bond with it and pet it his expression changed and he bared his teeth and made hostile noises between his hiccups - neigh hic hic neigh! The hics of course were because of the rum.
So time passed and one day I realised that it was a huge horse who was out to kill me. He would drum his heels against the insecure door to his stable and would try to get out and bite me.
He was housed at the top of our long driveway and each day I had to pass the horse to go down to the road to catch the local minibus to take me to school. The bus was filled with school children from the same school where I taught.
One day the horse had escaped and came out of the bushes at me and I dodged her front hooves and ran like hell down the driveway into the waiting bus. All the kids were in uproar. It would do this constantly and every day a small crowd gathered at the bottom of the hill and, it is alleged, took bets as to see if I would make the bus before the horse. I would walk into my classroom and the kids would start whinnying. So embarrassing.
I became a nervous wreck and when my husband saw me flinging the children's clothes into suitcases then he took me seriously and would escort me to the bus every morning. This worked well for a time but a few weeks later things really came to a 'head'. I heard the bus blowing and my husband was in the b/room and told me to go on my own.
I went to the corner of the house to peep around to see where the horse was and the horse simultaneously put his head around the same corner and our heads collided. We both screamed/neighed in fright and took off neck and neck, down the hill to the bus. It was disputed whether I won by a nose or a short head; but what is not disputed is that I won!
Tell me, did you ever own an animal that not only gave trouble but actually hated you?

OMGOSH CYNTHI, Please tell me u don't have this mean creature anymore. I have never had a mean animal like that, THANK HEAVENS. U shouldn't have had to keep it around long as u did but guess the kids loved the crazy thing. I guess i would have had someone shoot it if it had belonged to me.

No I got rid of it years ago. I sold half shares to a trainer and the trainer bought the feed etc. He entered it in some races but it never won anything.

Hello my dearest friend,
I am still laughing out loud, let me compose myself again before I can type to respond back. How come you always end up landing at the wrong end?
It must be very scary to run against a horse, one thing is for sure if it was a race horse you won against him a number of times that too in something in which he should be the best at.
You are quite a runner thats what I have to bear in mind about my friend. Lol I am still not able to stop laughing.
Hehehehehe Bodhi

That was definitely not Mr. Ed then. Hmm, maybe the horse did not like you because he sensed you thought he'd die? I am not sure... but that is one interesting story. We don't have horses ourselves, but live across from a farm and from time to time see horses... I smiled at the horse popping it's head around the corner.

I assume you eventually got rid of the horse?
A number of years ago I had a cat that would attack me. I bought her as a kitten from a pet store, the one and only cat I'll ever get at a pet store (not because of how she turned out, but because I've learned it's best to adopt).
She was a crazy cat! She'd hide out under chairs, sofas, around corners. I wouldn't see her. When I'd walk past she'd either reach out and swat at me, or she'd jump out, scaring me. When I'd run she'd chase after and constantly attack my ankles and lower leg.
She never hurt me though! She was doing it playfully and never once did she put her claws out.
I did have to get rid of her eventually. I'd had her a couple of years, but then the fleas got so bad, and we couldn't afford any flea medicine, and I had the little kids in the house. I got rid of her, but kept my other 2 cats... I still feel so badly for getting rid of her, I was just so frustrated by the flea situation.

Ooooh, sounds like a nasty dog but bigger.
I've never kept an animal as don't like things that move, there's a couple of wild tortoises in the olive grove but they look after themselves without human interference and cause not a jot of trouble. Which just leaves the pet spider who has been known to cause great worry if he's not in his usual spot, as something bigger may have come in and eaten him. We're both very fond of him as he works so well at catching his dinner of flying ants and mosquitoes and we both exchange good mornings with him but apart from the odd worry about him he's no bother at all.

Oh much much bigger than a nasty dog! Your little pets sound so harmless! Thinks: why is life always on the edge and I do not ask for it?

Of course I did not laugh, but your discussion put me in a good mood. I can just see how the children in the class rooms would have made the sound. Lucky nobody drew a picture of a horse chasing you in the black board.
You know, I also have a bad experience in horses. A few years back,I wanted to become big in the society, and move around with the big wigs. So what did I do, I purchased a share in a race horse. My uncle was the horse trainer. I thought I had made a good deal and I started dreaming. Whenever this horse was raced, I used to dress up and sit in the owners block. It gave me a big high sitting with all the cream of the society.
I always dreamed of the horse winning a race, and myself going and getting the cup or trophy. Unfortunately it remained a dream. The horse never won any races, he did not even come in the second or third place. The only thing that happened was it burnt a very, very big hole in my pocket, and I lost a lot of money in training and of course betting.
Of course the horse was a nice horse, and he always used to lick my hand when I used to feed it. The poor thing broke a leg in a race and it was finally put to sleep.

You are very welcome to laugh - I laugh whenever I remember this horse. I am sorry though that you lost money on your horse. It s definitely a rich man's sport and I was not rich

cynthiann,
This is by far the most hilarious post here and you are really a gem!
Talking about not getting along with a race horse, ha! Your story her really bowled me over. Well, in life we do have our odds with people and pets or even horses in your case and I am sure we are all not laughing during that time.
Even humans can be overbearing without the rum or gin and worse than your race horse. It has been a mixed week for me and your post here really brought me much cheer. At least, before I board my flight for India in a few hours time.
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice weekend.

The only animal that I think hated me was my husbands gerbil. He bit my finger and wouldn't let go so I shook my hand and it flung off and hit the ceiling. My hubby was shocked to see what had transpired. After that I never touched that evil gerbil again, I stuck with my own lil gerbil.

No, I can't say that I have. Although our first dog, poor thing didn't get much affection from me, I was a cat person. And later when I tried to pet her, I got no reaction at all.
So did you train for the Olympics after that?

Been there done that...we have a horse now that was abused...we got him cheap..but that wasn't why we got him..oringally he was fairly good natured, til we got him home! He's a tobiano paint..a black and white beaut. He is also a mutt-no papers. We fell in love with his sad eyes. Little did we know he was mad at all humans! He'd rear up, then charge us tossing his head around...then if he could..he'd corner you and slam you with all his strength and yes..he'd bite! We didn't know why at first-then the vet explained things to us...This horse was majorly misunderstood. His actions were really reactions..because he didn't trust us and also from what the prior owner allowed. He was allowed in the HOUSE by the prior woner and when he was actually fed it was by a trash can. So he would charge and attack us if he saw us taking out the trash..and he was smacked around a lot...so he watched for our body language-any touching was a no-no. We tried to train him but he kicked two out of the 3 trainers, the last had heard about him and only lasted one lesson..she called him "diablo" or devil. After 5 years of working with him-he's now broke and calmed down majorly.
So how long did you keep him for and was he a stallion? Ours chilled out 2 years after gelding...honestly it took that long!
