I didn't watch much Japanese movie...
What I have watched are "The Ring",“Incantation Resentment"."Death Note"....
I really don't know what they were saying...
As a horrible movie,I don't think they were scary....
From that time I really don't like Japanese movie at all..
People may say that it just because I am Chinese.
But I learned Japanese for 3 years, and I am working on a Japanese Company.
I think that something of Japanese should be learninged by us.Such as politeness, abides by the plege, treat everything earnestly.
But something do not approvaled by me.I learn from one of my Japanese Collegue that,Japanese man maltreat their wife....Their man thought woman should stay at home.Because woman was borned for house keeping....

The only Japanese movies I like are Godzilla and Samurai movies. The seven samurai is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Keep in mind I don't speak Japanese, but that is how good the movie was. I don't know much about Japanese culture, but I don't think that makes a difference in liking or not liking Japanese movies. I like sushi, Aikido, and Japanese girls. Just kidding on the last one, because I don't know any Japanese girls personally. I love Chinese food, kung fu movies, and Bruce Lee. That is all I know of the Chinese culture, but what I do know I love.

People are ussually too closed when it comes to foreign culture. Specially when that culture is the complete opposite of one's own.
Japanese culture is beautifull, complex and old. Though most people think that since WW2 japan idiocincracy has been obscured by occidental appearance, they are still the honorable, hard working people they allways were.
Japanice cinema is great, and has inspired many western film makers into major cultural slams.
Take George Lucas, for example.
There was this movie calles "Hidden Fortress" by Akira Kurosawa (same director as Seven Samurai). Its a movie about a war against an empire that possesed an impenetrable fortress, narrated from the view-point of two lowly peasants.
Ring any bells? Look at Darth Vader Hellmet, and then take a look at any samurai armor and let me know. The Lightsaber Fighting Stances? Iaido, a kenjutsu dicipline practiced by most samurai.

There is a movie called Battle Royale, (I think it's Japanese). It was Quentin Tarantino's favorite movie of the last 15 years. It's gory and a bit sick, but well-made.

I love the movies of Akira kurosawa -- an acclaimed genius in the industry. I particularly like his movie based on Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' and then there is this brilliant collection of little science fiction stories. A scene from one of them stays in my mind -- monstrous flowers growing in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion due to the radiation.
The Ring was extremely scary -- so scary that I could not watch more than a little. Much scarier than anything else I have seen (The Exorcist). Even the squeaky music is scary. I believe many Japanese killed themselves because of the music and the movie. The director must be a master of the horror genre. He knows that if you don't really show the face of horror but only imply it (as he does with this girl's face covered by a sheet of long hair), it is much more scary. Now whenever I look at a well, I cringe!
