Some people think that machine translation is highly developed in today's society,so it is not necessary for children to learn language. It was a dream of many scientists and inventors to make a translation machine, which could break the barriers between languages and change on into another smoothy. Now,with more advanced translation software put into use,it seems that the dream is coming true in our times. So do our yonng childrens not need to learn foreigh languages?

i think young children should learn other languages. not just for the fact that they will be able to more easily communicate with people of other cultures but it will help their development. studies have shown that children who are bilingual more easily absorb and retain information, probably something to do with coping with learning two languages at a young age.
if my children were to learn a language though, it would be something common. but i am really keen to learn and teach my children sign language.

According to me it is necessary to learn foregn language because it is added flavour to your resume. In todays time of globalisation, you should know a language apart of your mother toungue. You can easily communicate with the foreign clients if you know thier language. And they readily do business with you.Today companies are hiring professionals who know foreign language.

I always heard that English is becoming the universal language. There are so many other languages it would be hard for me to choose a language to learn other than English. Although the translators are ok they do lack some of the personalties hey need to say the right thing.I think if you live in the US and want to learn another language then go for it. Otherwise don't worry about it as much.

Hi vincyk, no need at all for them to learn languages if they both prefer speaking through machines. Here's a better idea still, replace the children with machines.
Seriously I think it is fantastic when children are exposed to foreign languages the earlier the better. My son was bi-lingual at 4, started a third langauge a couple of years ago at 8, and next year at age 11 there will be a classical language introduced as well.

We live in Kentucky, and there is a high concentration of Hispanic immigrants from Mexico here and many that don't speak English at all. This is the reason that I feel that it is important to teach Spanish to children here from a very young age. My daughter is in first grade and they do get Spanish twice a week at their school. I think this is good for us in the short run and also in the long run because eventually she is going to be an adult and in her business life she is likely to encounter people that don't speak English. Besides that, I think in the long run by having the ability to speak more than one language, it will make a person more marketable.

I think it's always good for children to learn more because you never know what the future will bring. I can speak foreign languages and they've helped me very much with my work. We can't always rely on technology to think for us. I think learning the language is always better.

I think It's better to teach children what foreign language we can teach. It's for their own good those machine are just machine they will never learn any language because it's already translated to the native language who's using it. Having the ability to speak foreign languages (1 or more) is a big advantage and achievement for oneself. That's what I think, like here in mylot if don't understand or speak the universal language...English, it would be hard for you to participate in this site.

In my opinion, learning a foreign language is very important. For example, I am a Chinese, but I am in US now. It is impossible for me to come here if I cann't speak English. It is very inconvenience using a machine for traslation. You cann't always take a traslation machine with you when talk with some people.

No matter how well those machines will work, even people, there is always something lost in translation. When you read a translated story, you can only get translater's view about the story. If you want to enjoy a foreigh movie or novel, or know a foreigh people well, you'd better to learn the language, understand them on your own.
