Does Anyone Know How To Remove....????

.....Old tape from a mirror? Okay my world won't end if old tape remains on my mirror but it does drive me nuts and looks tacky. I have this gigantic mirror on the one wall of my living room. Years ago, I taped up decorations on the mirror and have yet been able to get the old tape off. (Just finished cleaning the mirror tonight) I realize scraping it off isn't a good idea as it would scratch it and I"m none too keen about using any kind of chemical thing either, not with my two cats around. So if you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear.

Hi Pye! Nothing is more annoying than old tape marks. My mother used to use oven cleaner to remove the adhesive marks in the tub from those stick-on traction decals. That is a chemical though. I usually use peanut butter. For something like old tape, I'd cover it and leave it for a day or so. Then, if you have an old credit card (or something like that), you should be able to scrap it off. If there's a little glue left, reapply the peanut butter. Good luck!

It's the oil in the peanut butter that makes it work, and it doesn't run because it's thick. Any oil would work, even WD40 which is a fish oil. Old credit cards or plastic membership cards are wonderful things. I use one as a scooper when I'm dicing onions and peppers...lol.

Eucalyptus oil is excellent for stickers and tape, Pye - and flyspray also often works! Good luck!

Try Goo-Gone. It is this yellow cleaner...kind of thick. Works on tape and sticky stuff. I don't think it is harsh or toxic.

I agree about Goo-Gone...you don't use much, works on everything....including price stickers from few merchants on items you want to look good....old tape on anything.. I use only healthy solutions at home, but when using goo-gone, I take only few drops directly to the spot. It is similar to orange solvent.

I'll read the ingredients of it before buying--guess I'm very over protective with my kitties...LOL

actually, the silvering should be on the back side, so a soft (like a credit card) scraper wouldn't hurt the mirror but could still get the worst of the tape off then something like Goo Gone would finish it off

What about peroxide? I know it has a ton of uses and shouldn't be too harmful to the cats that I know of.

I used hot soapy water,( not boiling) left it to soak for a while and then gently scrapped it of and it works every time, if I could not get it all of straight away I would just keep putting the water on till I managed to get it all of Good Luck I hope you will be able to remove it

Well, there goes my 2 ideas then, Pye. 1st was to use a flat razor blade to remove it and 2nd to get a small can of goo-gone and rub-a-dub-dub till it all comes off then clean as normal.

Try vegetable oil. You will need to kind of soak the area but it may remove the remains of the tape. Otherwise another great thing to use is WD40. It will soak into the old glue and loosen it. I normally use nail polish remover, but since you really don't want to use chemicals I would go with the oil or WD40.

There's a product called Goo Gone. It's A chemical. However, if your kitties don't lick the mirror they'll be just fine. I think it's a great product. I've used it for sticky labels that leave residue on glasses or dishes. I've never tried it on tape.

Hi Pye! I think Nail Polish remover works. There is also something called Gunk (I think that's the name) that can dissolve gum residue. You might find that in an auto parts store (like Pep Boys). But, the remover you can get for $1 at any dollar store. Try the cheapest first!

I think I've used WD 40 to take the sticky stuff left by tape off of a glass surface. Back when I was buying and reselling old furniture and stuff tricks like that came in handy.

If it has a lot of chemicals in it though wouldn't want to use it around my kitties

Eucalyptus oil will lift off the paper and the adhesive, just dab a little on and let it soak in then polish it off. Eucalyptus oil is also good fore removing stains from fabric without the need to wash the fabric. The oil is so fine it evaporates into the air.

Hi Pye, I haven’t read all the other responses but I wonder if anyone has mentioned eucalyptus oil. It works very well to take glue off things from labels etc and I have used it to take tape of the top of my TV; I had two decorative cats taped to the top of the TV and when I moved them of course the tape stayed! Eucalyptus oil on a cotton pad took it right off!

I suppose with 50+ responses you've already found a few dozen ways to do it but here's one more anyway. My mom always just used Pam cooking spray to remove anything sticky and it works like a charm. Soak the tape with cooking spray and scrape it off with a razor blade after a few minutes. You can also get a product called Goo Gone that works great.

Hey there pye, by now they've answered this but I used to take razzor blades and scrape the tape off. Warm Viniger water will loosen it up and the use the razzor to scrape it off. I've also used steel wool on mirror (for when those wonderful moments that the kids gets ahold of the hairspray and cover my mirror with it).
