Recently I have been interested in listening to audible novels in English. I find it very helpful in improving my listening skill as well as my English level to a higher one.
I think that it is very helpful to us English learners whose native language is not English. I am wondering how many of you have ever listened to audible English novels.
Do you like it compared with regular novels?
Which do you prefer?
Or do you like both?

Earlier I used to read lot of novels when I was in school and college. Now for want of time I stopped reading. I am now addicted to net after my official works.
Novels of both kinds are a big no for me. If you enjoy reading, then you can improve your language to a great extend by conventional method. Wish you all the best with your new found hobby.

My children always say audible e-book is good to listen and time saving too as simultaneously you can do other work also or you can listen while travelling etc. Now you are also telling the same thing. I will try and let you know. From where do you get E-books?

It is time-saving so far as audible e-book is concerned. I love to listen to it when I go to bed and it accompanies to fall asleep all the way till I wake up. Isn't that something cool!

I am different. Since my mobile phone can support a software called "Voicebook". It can speak .txt book for me. That's nice because it is easy to find .txt books via the net. So when I am walking, I will listen to the ebooks rather than music. My eyes won't be tiring. And I will not feel bored on the way. I don't often read a regular book except for the cooking books today. As it is good enough for me to listen to the ebooks:)
I love China

Yeah, it is good for us to be able to listen to e-books instead of reading. I love to listen to it very much. I find that my listening ability is greatly improved with the use of it. You do have a nice cell phone with such an excellent function. It must be an expensive one, I guess. Enjoy yourself, youless.

Yeah, it would be great with a novel to read and listen to, but it is not that easy for me to make both ends meet. I mean I cannot get a book to match the audible novel. But I still enjoy it.

Hello my friend williamjisir Ji,
So far I have never come across and never tried eve. But I find teat there is a valuable point in your discussion. Reading a novel takes at least 2-3 days, whereas , here we learn many folds includi pronounciatio, but still I would go with reading a novel by myself
May God bless You and have great time.

Hello friend. I agree that it is a reading habit that we have developed when we prefer to read it by ourselves. You know, English is a foreign language to me. I love audible novels out of the reason that it can help improve my listening ability in the first place. I have a lot of fun with it. Be blessed, my dear friend.

Hello my friend williamjisir Ji,
So nice of you for favourable comments. Everyone has it's own nature foreverything. But there is a point in your way of making use of audible novels as this will definitely increase pronounciation part and utilise time at teh same time for other purpose as well, in form of bonus.
May God bless You and have great time.

I prefer reading the book myself rather than listening to the audio book. The narrator always tries to do both male and female voices which is weird to say the least...Especially, when the narrator tries to do the intimate scenes (shudder).
Definitely, better to read the book myself. At least I don't have to listen to a male trying to put on a female voice or vice versa...

Yeah, I agree with you that it is only narrated by one person. It could be better to have both male and female narrators in an audible novel.

it is nice to listen to stories but you cannot capture the totality of the novel without really reading it as to how the author wrote it. reading it with the book on hand perfects the whole experience of a good novel. The feel of the book, sitting on your favorite chair at acertain hour of the day with a cup of coffee at hand, etc. It is still is the basics that will rock you!

I agree that it is some kind of pleasure to read a book with a cup of coffee at hand sitting on a nice and comfortable chair. I love that feeling as well.

hmm... audible novels.. ??
i dont think that i've had the experience of 'listenting' to a novel..
i think i need to try it out before i could judge whether i like or not..
but i think i might find it 'difficult' to understand - i am not a native speaker myself - so i might not know all the words spoken / pronounced by the narrator..
so i might have to hold the book and 'read-along' as i listen to it...

It would be a good idea to hold a book and follow the recording for us people whose native language is not English. Give it a try, friend, to see if you feel interested in it. lol

I've never listened to books on tape, so I don't know whether or not I'd like them. It's my understanding that they can make a long road trip much more pleasant and seem shorter.

Hello William, happy to read a post from you again..
Though I love reading before but when I was engaged in sales I ran out of time doing such hobby. I really can't find time reading novels. This days however, that am not as busy as before, except of getting busy with the net (lol), I could have time for novels perhaps. It would be a great experience listening to audible novels am sure. Will try it friend, I know it would be a big help to us, English learners. Thanks for sharing, dear friend...Wish you a good day...

Hello bing. When we do not have enough time to read, we can really try to listen to audible novels or books while working and doing something else that is not so important to us. It can make both ends meet--working while listening to books. lol

I never listened to audible English novels, but I think it is a good alternative and could help to enhance our listening skills in English.
However, if I am so into a story, I don't think I have the patience to listen to the words one by one as I prefer to read at my own speed and build the characters as well as images in my head. Even so, I never tried the audible one, so, maybe I'm going to like it, too.

I guess you will like it if you try it yourself, especially when you go to bed. It will help sleep better like a lullaby.

I tried both and I liked both but if the voice is not good, it will be horrible to listen to audio books. And as I have a very wide screen, I prefer regular ebooks.

both are good ways to improve english,I think,if respectively used according to defferent condition. If the text of the novel is simple for one, then might as well listen to the audible book;if it is somewhat or very difficult for the listener, then it's better to read it.besides,we can promote our listening capability by listening a short version and make a advance in writing by reading the original text.so both of them are advisable.

I have a short audio story up on Sniplits.com. And there's my BBC Radio short story too tpo listen to at Associated Content. If you'd like to listen to these -- the BBC Radio one is free - do pm me. I think audio novels area great idea. The only thing is that while you're listening to them, you can't be busy with work on your PC - that's when you can miss stuff. And it also depends on how well the story is narrated. I tried to listen to Tolstoy's War and Peace but it was so badly narrated I could not continue.

Hello Sarandipity. The first time I listened to War and Peace, I was not quite pleased with the reader's accent when he tried to use a different accent. But now I am getting used to the accent.

If I am having a really hard time reading or understanding a novel, I will go out and get the audio, and I will listen to that as I am reading the novel that I am reading so that that way I can understand every word that I am reading. Sometimes, I actually need visual and audio because of my eye sight or because I am just not picking up what is being said. I am a native speaker, and I will still listen to audio. Another thing I find so very helpful, and a lot of my friends and I will do this, movies and television shows with the English captions/subtitles on it. Yes, I will read the words and watch the show at the same time, same with the movie. The reason why is that is improves my listening and reading skills at the same time. I do this with Spanish as well. I think that with just about any language, if you are having a hard time with learning it, it is nice to have the audio and the written words in front of you at the same time.
Try this if you can do this, get an English movie that you like, or one that you trouble understanding, but the English subtitles on it, and you will be able to see and hear the words at the same time. Also, you are seeing the film as well, so you can see, hear, and picture what is being said to you.

Hello friend. Yes, we can watch a lot of English movies with the English subtitles on it. When I watch this kind of movie, I try to look at the subtitles a lot. It is a good way to learn English as well. Thank you for the response, my dear friend.

I have never tried an audible novel yet but certainly it will be a terrific idea. It will not strain my eyes reading because when I started reading I find it difficult to put a book down until I finished it. It will also remind me of my mother telling me a story when I was young. Yes, that would be nice and definitely it will enhance our language learning experience.

Hello manong. I love it like one of the reasons you have mentioned, which is it helps protect our eyes from fixing upon the book for too long a time and helps reduces the eye strains. Give it a try and you will like it. Thank you for the response, my dear friend.

Hello haiershen. No worry about the understanding of English novels. Take an English novel to read and you will gradually understand the meaning of the words because they will appear many times. The more you encounter the new word, the more possibility you will have to recognize it. Reading is one of the best ways to enlarge your vocabulary. To learn English via audible novels, you will be able to improve your listening ability a lot faster. Give it a try and I wish you to make greater progress in English learning. Happy learning, my dear friend.
