In many a conversation, people try their very best to fight for their beliefs. Many times though, I would hear such a comment as... You are being self-righteous. That usually ends the exchange of ideas and words. I do not find anything wrong with self-righteousness. If at all, it is better that being hypocrite. Am I reasoning right? Advise me.

2 Tim 3:16 says, "All scripture is God-breath and is useful for teaching, rebuking, and training in righteousness" while, Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well".
Righteousness is from God... without Him we could do nothing. Only God knows what is best for us.
Personally, I used to be self-righteous but suddenly, I realized that it made me proud of myself. Making me feel that I'm better than others... that I'm always right. I looked up to myself. I've been judgmental at first but when I try not to be self-righteous and put myself on somebody's position, I became more understanding and considerate of others. It'll make us humble.
Mistakes and shortcomings are parts of our lives... We have learned lessons from them. They helps make our lives better. Every after each trials, we became stronger and stronger. Even scientists made lots of mistakes for them to make their inventions better and better and better. May God's righteousness be with us!

hi eileenleyva what is wrong with being self righteous? everything, that means
you are inflexible, you think you know it all and nobody else knows anything,
and you come over to others with this attitude. Nobody likes a self=righteous as
they always put the other person's ideas down, and entertain no other ideas but
their own. they are smug and not open to different ideas. fighting for your beliefs is not the same as not being open to other people's ideas and feelings.
Self-righteous people are always convinced that they are always right and everybody else is wrong.

Hi Hatley but there are several issues where I find both sets of arguments having equal merits. In such situations, dont u think deeper discussion is warranted so that each one can come up with more reasoning and more arguments that eventually point to one answer? I thought mylot was a place for that type of discussions. :)

Being self righteous isn't necessarily fighting for one's beliefs. Typically, when someone says that you are being self righteous, it can mean any of these things, usually in a combination of...
That you're being egotistical
That you're refusing to try to understand the view of others - You don't have to like what they believe, but just acknowledge that they have the right to their opinions and ways as much as you do

I think people who say this are just trying to end the argument. It's a way to keep your oponent quiet. Don't let them get to you. Just say "I am not self rightous. I just believe in the rightness of my position."
