Best coputer to buy?

I am in the market to buy a new computer this year or early next year. Is there really any difference now a days between computer brands. Should I go with a laptop or a desktop. I have a laptop now but the battery doesn't hold a charge so it is pretty much desktop computer anyway. I know the kids would like a laptop so they can go in different parts of the house but that is not that important to me. Any one have any good suggestions for me?

it depends on what you are going to use the computer for. if you are going for normal computer use, than any computer is fine. if ur going for gaming and stuff, you might try an Alienware... but im not sure if they sell Alienware in stores
